sorry but all they have done is improve the car with many different aspects.
Yep cheapened. Its no longer special. The B5 was hand-built on the A6 line. It was a sportscar disguised as a station wagon. Its road presence was and is awesome. The sides were pulled out, not just wheel arches added to a standard body.

I'm sorry but the B7 just doesn't do that. It's an S-line A4/A3 with some wheel arches.

Sorry to be negative but I think Audi should know they have lost the uniqueness of the RS brand.

Yes I agree the RS4 looks much like an S-line just as my previous car a BMW 325 Ci Sport looked in many respects just like and M3 but in some ways I'm glad, I am after the 'stealth bomber' effect.
But it's also been pointed out that in effect the RS4 is a completely different car from any other A4.
If show is what you want buy a Subaru WRX or Evo 8/9/10 etc
Me I'm happy with the subtle looks of the RS4

Are you saying the B5 falls into the same catagory as the above? That was an understated car, it just didn't look like every other model in the range. THAT'S the point here.
RS4 B5. Where it all started.
RS6+ Never to be replaced.
Replaced by: 997 Turbo. Didn't like.
Replaced by RS6. I like(d).
Land Rover Defender. Not as nippy.
Back with C6 RS6
And again C7 RS6

There's a B5 for sale at my local dealers and it looks great BUT the understated looks of the B7 are more 'me' I suppose, just a matter of choice I suppose

In defence of the B7, the original RS2 wasnt much different to a S2 Avant. Also its hard to tell a 535D with sports bodykit from a M5

Sorry, the B7 looks like a body kitted RAV4 at the front, the B5 looks like an Audi. I will be keeping the B5 and patiently waiting for their next high powered coupe.

If you go on the Audi online car configuration tool and spec an A4 3.0 TDI S-line to the same spec as a standard RS4, it works out at only about £10K cheaper. I think that makes the RS4 good value.
When you consider that the reason the RS4 handles so well is the lightweight engine (TDI will be considerably heavier), aluminium wings & bonnet that alter the weight distribution significantly, it is even better value.
If you want a car to look like an RS4 get an S-line of whatever drivetrain you like, but if you want the real deal there is only one option IMO.
Of course you could buy an S4, but if I did that I would spend almost as much as the price differential in getting it to RS4 performance spec and then it still wouldn't be an RS4 would it!
Remember, repeat after me:
"YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE"
"YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE"
"YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE"
"YOU KNOW IT MAKES SENSE"

Maybe another reason to definitely go for the Optic pack then to differenciate the look from lesser A4's.
Am i right that this only available as an option on the RS4?

Agree with SimonS4MTM & RS4ever.... althought it's a different car, it deffo doesn't look as menacing and mad as B5... went to collect my son from school 2 days ago and the street is usually decorated with some nice motors... Cayenne, 911, 330 Sport.... they look attractive... but then I saw a silver B5 RS4 pull into it and I just had to stop, stare and enjoy the feeling. The new RS4 looks nice... and that's about it. I've ordered a Phantom black one and I'll get a smoked tint just to make it a little more menacing. I'm not keeping it long as I've got the new M3 on order which I think will turn heads much more simply 'cos it's going to look completely different to the current one. Unfortunately the new RS4 looks in same ways very similar to my wife's A3 3.2 and most S-lines on the road. I presume the Avant will make it look a bit fatter and more gangster-like. The current B5 and all RS6's look hard as nails... not nice! Layer Cake anyone????? ;)
