This car is a beast .
Some info and pictures on www.s-cars.org .
Only 213 of these 306 bhp monsters were made and almost entire bodywork cladding made from Kevlar! Not bad for 1985. Audi's rival to the Ford RS200, Metro 6R4, Lancia 037, etc etc Group B homologation monster.
Got quite a bit of info at my folks place in the attic. Will collect quite soon and forward details.

Lee

It would be worth contacting Keith at Dialynx (www.dialynx.co.uk) - they restored Tom Hammonds' old Sport and have worked on many- if anybody knows anything about them it will be Keith.
NB - If you think your RS4's/RS6's are quick you may wish to check out Keith's 640HP Sport quattro - 0-60 in 2.37 seconds at GTi 2002.
The Sport was based upon the upright A pillar/windscreen combination on the 80 saloon and made 12.6" (I think) shorter than the standard 10v turbo of the time - a completely new shell mind - no cut'n'shut as all copies are! The windscreen rake was changed because of terrible glare from the dashboard reflecting from the screen. It was made shorter to handle the hairpin's (without reversing!) and to make it 'twitchier' with an oversteer bias (standard quattro's are inclined to understeer). It had a full alloy engine sporting 4 valves per cylinder and the K27 (later used on RS2) turbo, plus larger intercooler. Also it was the first quattro to use electronic fuel injection (LH-Jet) as opposed to K-Jet on normal cars. It had kevlar/composite roof panel (no sunroof!) and kevlar/composite wings front and back. Larger brakes - adjustable height suspension and 9x15" Ronals. LHD only, I am sure I have forgotten something but anyway - it is the original daddy....
It is rumoured that Audi had over 1000BHP out of this basic engine and used 5 valves per cylinder - useful until Grp B was banned of course. NB the Sport was outclassed by the mid-engined Peugot and Lancia - but dont tell anyone !
Sorry to waffle - I love these cars.

Standard RS4 (is it the only standard one left?)
The S1 is the rally dirivative of the Sport Quattro, the fire breathing waste gate chattering car that was seen on rally stages until 1986 when Group B cars were banned because they were too fast. The successor to the A2, the long wheel base car that was used from 1981 until the 1984, the S1 was first used on the Monte Carlo Rally in January 1985.

The S1 uses a K27 based turbo. The RS2 is all K26.
They aren't the same and won't even bolt up to the same manifolds. The K27s used in Audis were either the 55mm round Audi type flange or the standard K27 rectangle same size as a garret T4. The K26 is 50mm round hole like the RS2 manifold, S2 manifold, and urS4.
My website has a link to some turbos. The RS2, Sport Quattro and a S1 turbo from a Pike's Peak car.

Thanks for posting this up. That K29 is one big turbo - 750 BHP at the 'bottom' of the hill ?jamesbufkin wrote:The S1 uses a K27 based turbo. The RS2 is all K26.

Is that a rhetorical question?DavidT wrote:Thanks for posting this up. That K29 is one big turbo - 750 BHP at the 'bottom' of the hill ?
I think the 1985 car was rated around 550 hp. The two turbos I have are from Early June 1985 and were used in Test runs. They're #9 K27 hotsides with a K29 coldside using a 3450 compressor wheel. The thinness of the air makes them ideal for high altitude use, where the size requirement of the compressor is larger. Hence larger turbos that don't surge like they would at sea level. Audi also used the S1 style 2nd wastgate anti-lag system on these turbos.

I've just today got a similar setup running on my car, but I'm not using the 2nd wastegate yet.
