S6 Buying Advice Needed?

Post by Gibbo » Fri Mar 03, 2006 1:52 pm

Hi all,
I'm looking at buying myself an S6 (2.2) in the next few months.
I've looked at a few on Autotrader and Ebay but most seem to have 100k+ miles on the clock, although I have read somewhere that the S6 are "Nicely run in at 100,000".
How many miles are these machines good for, and if I were to go for an example with this sort of figure on the clock what other potential problems should I be looking for?

Cheers,

Gibbo

Hi,

I purchased my Audi S6 Advant off Ebay in mid summer last year. It’s one of the last, so it a ‘97’ auto. It had 101K miles (probably just run in nice) when I bought it but was in lovely condition and came with a full Audi Service history. Apart from replacing the wheels and tyres for ‘RS6’ kit and a boot lock to stop the alarm going off at night, until last week it’s had nothing spent on it, It was that good when I got it.

Basically, do not touch one unless you get its service history, Audi or one of the top Audi specialists will be ok. Budget to replace the suspension and have it professionally tuned. I had the brakes replaced at the same time as a full service and apart from the odd bits ‘n’ bobs; it has been a lovely car to own. Bits can be expensive from Audi but I have found that if you know a good professional Audi tuner (i.e. QST at Haywards Heath) you will not go far wrong. I had ‘Kim Collins’ at QST look over the car and it needs nothing else.

I must admit, when I had all the bits done, (i.e. suspension, brakes service, MOT, etc at QST) I was that impressed with the main man at 'QST', that I had a MTM conversion done at the same time.

The engine, gearbox, the majority of the running gear and basically everything else should be OK, just have a good look at it before you buy it unless its supper cheap but beware, as ‘cheap’ will be at your cost. Fully galvanised means nothing if it not been looked after and/or abused, so check the arches, bonnet, wings and the tail gate, etc.

The interior is hard wearing, especially if it got leather seats, the only costly bit inside was the ‘Auto Selection Indicator’ fitted to the instruments. You cannot get just the bulbs from Audi, so ‘£120’ latter it now lights up which is good for night driving. Make sure the Air-Conditioning works correctly, heat it up the cool it down and have a general play to make sure all the switch gear works inside the car and does what it is supposed to do.

Now it’s not quite an ‘RS2’ or a later day ‘RS6’ but with the ‘MTM conversion, it really does fly, and you would be hard pressed to leave it in one of the above anyway, unless you’re a bit or a full nut.

I will be doing other bits to it over the next few years and ‘QST’ will be doing all of it. I should have bought one years ago but I intend to keep this car for a long time if not indefinitely. Even if I do buy another car.

Regards,

Andy H.

Hi Andy H
What is involved in the MTM conversion - how much was it and how long did it take them to do.
Did you see a big increase in fuel comsumption after the conversion?

Hi,

The conversion cost around £700 and I have not seen a notable drop in fuel consumption around town, not that the car was economical any way. (Boost up from 1.6bar (ish) to 2.2/2.3bar after the conversion.

Motorway driving has got better by about ‘2-3mpg’ and speeds around 40-60 mph are generally better. The most noticeable difference is the response from the engine and obviously more grunt at low speeds. I had a free flow air filter fitted at the same time and in a few weeks time I will be having a MTM exhaust fitted, (£1000) which should allow the gases to flow better but without the boy-racer howl/noise. Just a bit sportier/ deeper. In case you are interested, the exhaust is a ‘cat back’ system, so the exhaust is replaced from the exit port of the cat, all the way to the rear of the car. I will probably put some free flow cats on the car towards the end of the year and a new down pipe from the turbo in a bore to match the MTM exhaust at the same time and have the engine re-tuned by QST again.

The only point I would make though, is fit better brakes before hand as I did. I had the suspension changed as well and to be perfectly honest even though it has dropped the ‘new’ ride height by ’30 to 35mm’ on a ‘1997’ car the suspension had already sagged, so it is not very noticeable height wise but the chassis dynamics are a lot better.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Andy H.

Hi, Again,

I forgot to mention that the conversion took less than a day for the MTM engine re-map and tune but I did have a full service done at the same time.

Thanks for the info. I have mine for a bout 1.5 years now and am getting to the point where I'm thinking a bit more power would be nice.
