Air mass meter?

Hello All,
Can anyone help with one of those niggly running problems that it appears all the 1.8T VAG group engines will suffer from at some point.
Mine is a 2000 210bhp car and has over the last couple of months developed a problem. The turbo seems to have gradually been offering less boast in general, and on occasion spluttered badly, or gaving a huge surge of power around the 5K mark! (Wish it was like that all the time)
This was diagnosed (VAG technician) as a secondary air leak. I've just had 2 pipes replaced at the front of the engine. Cured??
No not really the car now really dosen't run at all. The symptom is very similar to faulty injectors in the ol VR6 engines. It basically misses constantly.
The cure (VAG technician) a new air mass meter. Will this work?
Any body had this trouble?
Thanks
Mark
