Grinding noise on turning - what is it??

Post by stew123 » Wed May 31, 2006 9:55 pm

Just recently bought a 2001 S3 (and love it!). Problem is the car has an intermittent 'grinding/rubbing' noise coming from the front tyres when on full lock at parking speeds.

Sounds like the tyre is catching on the arch - checked this out and no issues (car is also running standard 17" Avus' and suspension setup).

This only happens very so often and is hard to repeat when it does!

Any thoughts??

My mistake. Problem seems to be coming from rear of car. Sounds like handnrake may be sticking and causing rubbing noise - is this common? Noise seems to go after setting off, so thing it could be rear discs/pads binding. Make a noise lilike the the tyres aren't turning when it happens!

I had a similar problem on my S4..turns out to be that where I parked the car the tarmac was quite loose and it was simply the tarmac/stones being ground under the front tyres. The problem stopped when I paked the car in the garage. Hope your problem is as simple as that one!

After I have washed my car or heavy rain, when I first drive off after leaving it over night, the pads are stuck to the disc and it makes a grinding noise for a few metres, plus the brakes are sensitive. This is normal.
