Costs when your engine goes bang...

Post by BlackS3 » Wed May 10, 2006 2:49 pm

As most of you will know I melted a piston on my 2000 S3 2 months ago. A lot of people are interested in the cost to fix.

Jabbasport have had the car 3-4wks while looking into parts for it. Because the cylinder wall was scratched a re-bore would be necessary. Mahle usually supply the oversized pistons but they no longer do. Audi don't make an oversized piston suitable for the APY engine.

Jabba then spoke to Audi in Germany about a replacement short engine. Audi would like around £3600 for this. Obviously then you would have to include shipping and fitment costs on top of that.

With the options running out for a cost effective solution and me being too fussy to accept a 2nd hand lump (if one could be tracked down). Jabba have come up with the idea of doing their 1900cc conversion to the engine as what is carried out when going for big turbo conversion. This includes conrods the lot and will be run on a Jabba ECU.

This will take 3wks to complete and I'm looking at 280+bhp with 310-320lbft of torque. All for around 4k so I'm quite pleased because I can write a lot of the cost off on the modding as opposed to paying 5k+ to put back as normal

It was 3wks from Monday just gone so I will let everyone know how it progresses and I'm planning to be there for the rolling road set up.

Is the £4k for the 1.9 conversion only? ie not including the big turbo?

If so, how much would the big turbo conversion be to a working 1.8?

3-4k for bigger turbo depending on model. I was looking at 4k model that jabba recommended which would give over 400bhp with 1900cc conversion

You need stronger conrods etc if you want to run over 360-380bhp reliably.

You will not get 400bhp out of a standard jabba big turbo even with 1.9,380bhp max with others mods.

Jabba are now doing a range of Turbos depending on power wanted. The big turbo conversion kits come with many parts (injectors, fuel pump, etc).

Not sure on conversion price without blown engine as my price includes head work. But then Jabba are mates with my dad so hopefully I got a little discount.

I'm looking for over 400bhp next year (hol for missus first...) with my 1900cc conversion and bigger turbo from Jabba. Jabba seem quite confident as they are always trying out new parts/ideas....
