S4 owner with a sick A3 - anyone got any thoughts??

Wondered if you could help??!! My Mrs '98 1.6 A3 is exhibiting some peculiar symptoms which my local Audi dealership can't figure out.

It'll start OK first thing in the morning but if you switch off after a 2-3 mile trek into town the bugger takes 5 or 6 turns to get going again(?)

And during a longer run if she stops at traffic lighhts or a roundabout the car will rev to >4000 for no particular reason (nothing to do with her driving). The car has only done 45K and is in fine fettle otherwise.

Appreciate any thoughts.
