Noisy S3

Hi - I'm new to Audis and have been test driving S3s for the last month or so. Fantastic car , but I've noticed one flaw (for me at least) and I was wondering anyone else has and what they did to cure it (if anything).
Basically, if you are crusing at between 60 and 80mph in 5th or 6th, there is quite a loud resonance noise that comes through the floor. It reverbs quite a bit and can get irritating quite quickly. I'm sure that the exhaust system is the source. Does anyone have a similar experience? If so, did a MillTek exhaust (or anything else) cure the problem?
Many thanks,
BubbleSnap

It's most probably a crack in the exhaust or something. Is it a standard car? Depending on the upgrades it may have had, such a noise may be normal.
Anyone else got any ideas?
Rock on

Does it happen when cruising? S3's suffer from dual mass flywheel issues most noticable about 3k rmp when letting your foot off the gas. It is a rumble type vibration. It goes away the second you apply throttle though.

It is consistent on cruising, throttle on, but it is at 3000rpm-ish (in 5th/6th, this is approx 60-80mph, I think).
I've heard it on 3 210bhp cars. Its irritating enough on the motorways that I'd like to see if there is a cause/cure before I buy. I do a lot of motorway miles at the moment on the day 2 day.

Hi there,
I have a 210 S3 and cannot say I have this problem.
My car does produce a very small whine in 5th/6th when I take my foot off the pedal but its nothing major.
Im guessing if you have experienced the same noise in 3 or 4 cars it cant be anything serious?
Hmmmm??
Good luck on finding an S3 though

Yes... Its a minor thing on a great car. Its obviously not a mechanical fault, but its just on the threshold of irritating.
Perhaps another drive or two help me ignore it!

Re-reading your post, I'm guessing it's just the exhaust resonating at a certain RPM. People with Miltecks will be able to confirm whether this changes.
I rememember my S3 used to do this, but only at about 70MPH in 6th.

I thought it was just me being picky!
I'll try Milltek and see what they say.
I thought AmD might know but they don't.

I agree with Ben. It is at about 2800 - 3200 rpm in 6th, yes the usual (?) ish motorway cruising speed of about 70 -83 ish mph. Mine is the same but it is really quiet at 3600, trouble is that is about 90 -92 mph just a little to obvious on the usual roads i'm on
I'm sure it is resonance, possibly in the exhaust. My A3 was quiet. I remember that Audi Driver complained about it !n

So I guess it is a known problem but most people aren't bothered by it.
Ummmmm... I'm so in two minds about this... I love the car otherwise...

To be fair, it isn't that bad a problem. Perhaps the cars you've driven have been pretty bad examples. Just make sure it has BOSE and crank it up Who drives on the motorway without the tunes blaring out?
Cheers

I decided the S3 was worth it. I'll try a Milltek exhaust if the noise really bugs me. Now, to find one that the right spec!!
