Group Buy FMIC

Post by chris22 » Sun Jan 11, 2004 9:25 pm

Was wandering if anybody would be intrested in a group buy for the front mounted intercooler(FMIC).
Fitted or supply only.
Star Performance have gave a good price of £499 supply only.
I will phone them and ask what reduction we'll get if group buy.
Anyone up for it?

It was not a lot less at all mate, I wish! That's a good price and about what I paid for mine. Simon has the Star one and apparently it wasn't a great fit and needed playing with.
I still haven't got round to fitting mine (slack, no garage, drive, cold, wet, excuse, excuse ) but it looks top drawer. The S3 may not be around for too much longer, depending on what the bank says tomorrow, so my unused FMIC will be up for sale shortly.
All the best with the GB anyway lads,

Cheers

Ben

I dont know if its relevant, but the email from STAR to me back in April said:

"When fitting you retain the O/S intercooler it links to the FMIC, we remove the N/S no cutting required"

I'm not up for a group buy unfortunately though

Mine got made by a company that makes prototypes for Visteon (Ford, Aston etc) and Samco did the hose work. Simon Elman had it made, he'd be the best chap to speak to (gone quiet recently, probably spent his BT Openworld money on a DAF lorry turbo or something ).
I don't think the Star one was crap, it just wasn't great out of the box.
Bass, you have first refusal IC is alloy finish and Samco's are blue.

Cheers

Sorry I also have no interest in a group buy. other fixes will be taking up my cash this year.

Glen (ess_three) on as.net has been thru this process so he may offer more advice.

good luck.

I`m still hanging around
Just been busy
I`ve just fitted a new cold air intake airbox which was the reason for fitting the FMIC in the first place.
It frees the front of the car so I could run two 2.5 inch hoses to the side grille for some positive air pressure.
I will post some pics soon
Bass I have a FMIC on my desk let me know if you want it.

I'm not really sure that there is a need for a FMIC on an S3.
I've logged intake temps on my car(back when it was 270 ish bhp),on one of the hottest days of the year and the temperatures were fine,I think 53 deg was the hottest I managed to get it and that was after 5 back to back 0 to 100mph runs, even after this once the car reached 70mph the temps dropped back rapidly to the mid 30s.

I thought when I fitted the big turbo that the temperatures would rocket, but(albeit in cooler conditions)so far so good,no temps higher than 50 deg even at full chat.

The twin intercooler setup on an S3 aint the worst, its reasonably efficient, the one thing I had considered was removing the front foglights as they are right in the duct to the coolers. If you pull out one of these you'll see that the duct looks quite large and is well capable of feeding air to the I/Cs.
I ran an additional 2.5in feed from a duct(from a Porsche 928)fitted to the front panel behind the centre grille to the base of the std airbox. It seems to work well.

Cheers

That may be the case in the UK, but in Australia its different. The cars suffer from severe heat soak, the small IC's arent up to the job!

We get 40degree Celcuis temps with 95+% humidity here...

Simon, This IC, how much do you want for it? And whats required to fit it? I'm in Sydney, Australia
