Don't knock diesels, my local garage has a race-prepped 1.9 pdi golf pushing out 245bhp which has suprised a few hard-core petrol heads
Oh, and the black smoke comes in handy - you never seen the early james bond movies in his DB7 ?
Ha, ha !

I must admit diesel is really coming on in terms of performance. It's a nifty little explosion basically, which can really be milked for power, especially when you start throwing turbos around the place! I don't think it will be long before diesel rally cars are more commonplace. But say what you like about economy and torque, other than things like the Mercedes 3 litre turbodiesel and F1 powerboats, diesels do sound pretty pants (they don't smell great either).

Shame about Audi having no plans for an RS3. Though I have to say that personally the new A3 shape doesn't do much for me. I see one coming towards you and think, wow, it's an Audi and it goes past and I think so what. I really don't like the styling along the side and the rear. The old S3 shape is much better!
Have to say that I'm very impressed with the performance of our Ibiza TDI Sport (1.9 PD 130 bhp unit). I just love that torque and it's a pretty nippy beast and great fun to drive. Might be tempted by a diesel Cupra R in the future.
