Oil and Fixed Interval Servicing

Post by Cobstar » Thu May 29, 2003 10:12 am

Hmm back to the issue of what is really the right oil for the S3.

tjc's S3 is supposedly set up for fixed interval servicing - ie every 10,000 miles or 12 months whichever comes first. She's got just over 8k on the clock and the indicator started flashing up that a service was due in 1,000 miles and then dropped to 600 miles without having driven that far.

tjc rang the dealer and took it up there this am. They're saying the sensor is indicating a service as the car has the long life oil in for variable servicing. We'd assumed car was delivered with Castrol Formula SLX in tank but can't be certain. Carton of oil in boot was definitely Formula SLX.

Service interval indicator thing doesn't make sense to me as I'd have expected it to go longer than 9,000 miles given the way she's normally driven.

Oil in car currently is definitely Castrol Formula SLX as we changed oil and filter at 5,000 miles. Told the dealer we'd changed the oil.

Thought I'd read in the Audi UK magazine that all S3s should have oil that meets VW 503 01 regardless of whether they were on AVS or fixed interval servicing. The handbook says something different.

So what oil is supposed to go in on fixed interval servicing? And any idea what oil would have been in the car originally - she was first registered last Sept?
