Got one on order yet?
It is very interesting that nearly all of the other details in the Autocar article DO match what we already know or suspect. IMHO, someone has gone to a lot of trouble to leak this story in the detail it appears in.
I know that Autocar could be wrong, but in all the 20 odd years of reading it week in week out (sad man that I am!) the vast majority of the time their scoops are based upon fact and lead somewhere. They are not AutoExpress!
What is also interesting is that they suggest that Audi are finally cottening on to the fact that if they product the RS cars earlier in the model life ala M Series and the AMG range Audi could make a great deal more money, which, quite frankly is what this is all about.
For what it's worth, I think that the RS3 article is a fisghing expedition before an announcement in early summer that they will build it. Oh and Audi dealers will always take your money as a returnable deposit. My deposit for my RS4 was taken on that basis. Why should they change a business practice that gives tham a whole load of our cash for no risk?

Just for your information I thought you’d be interested in the following :
This is a shot from the series of official Audi press shots upon which Autocar based the images in their mag.

It is a slightly different shot but from the same shoot. If you look at the new grill on the "RS3" in the magazine you will see that there is ONE front parking sensor. This is because it’s a straight cut and paste from an A6 photo which has been then been tweaked and had the RS3 logo put on it. Basically it’s all make believe. It had to be really as the car doesn’t exist!
The story suggests that Dr Winterkorn has signed off both S3 and RS3 however senior sources in Germany are only confirming S3 and when asked didn’t know anything about an RS3.
Some people have suggested it’s Audi leaking information but this seems to be contrary to the news I have. In fact Audi are now fielding lots of calls from owners asking why they haven’t been informed about this new car. The fact is this car doesn’t exist so there’s nothing to tell. Audi always try to communicate the information once it is hard and fast. Audi work on the basis on waiting until there is correct official information before they try to communicate it, other wise it causes confusion with customer expectations. Sometimes waiting for this frustrates people (especially when all the magazines are playing at guessing what’s happening) but ultimately it gives more faith in Audi as people learn that what Audi officially say then actually happens. You’ll notice this from the information I have presented previously on this forum. Normally there’s loads of gues work but then I’ll bring you what’s actually happening. Audi seem keen on presenting this information as early as possible but I guess since it only comes out once 100% confirmed, this is sometimes later than some of us would like.
The article also seems to suggest that should a TT RS be built, it will have the S4’s 4.2 engine. Since the TT is based on the A3 size platform this really doesn’t work as all the engines on this platform are transverse which also means a Haldex quattro system. The 4.2 is longitudinal and uses a Torsen quattro system. Transverse and longitudinal platforms are generally not compaible, The fact that Audi will be introducting the A4 coupe, the Nuvolari and the Le Mans cars in the near future also means there would be little point in making the next TT any bigger than the A3 platform, otherwise it would overlap with the A4 Coupe. Additionally there is little TT type competiton at that size so there’s not really a market place.
It’s entirely up to the individual to make up their own mind about what’s going on but please take a step back and consider what you’d do in Audi’s position. Would you announce an RS3 before the S3 is even launched? Would you launch a TT which rivalled your own A4 coupe? Etc, etc, etc.
This post is obviously mine own interpretation from information I have received but it all seems to make a lot more sense that the supposed exclusive that Autocar have been promoting. If I was to play the same games as them then I guess I’d be suggesting that they are really struggling with sales and are looking for something to boost their numbers. This is only my speculation but that’s all they seem to go on so why not me?
Make you own minds up but don’t be led into believing it’s fact just because some car journalist suggests. Don't simply believe me either (although I wouldn't get anything for making it up unlike a journalist) but question the information before you.
p.s. At least they got the name of the 5 door A3 correct. Most other magazines have been callling it the Avant!!

Took my S3 into Walton Audi for it's first service last Thursday and got chatting to a couple of the sales guys there...they'd already taken a deposit of someone for an RS3 recently. I bought a copy of AutoCar on the way home after collecting my recently serviced car...artitsts impression or not... I'm putting a deposit down this week for an RS3 !!! The girlfriend seems to think I'm going to be giving her the S3... yeah right!!!!
Agreed. What a fool you would be to put money down onscotty_2 wrote:A grand deposit for 4 years off a number of punters. Quite a nice business.

Sheesh,
One of the most notoreous traits we English have is queuing! I'm not sure completely that this is why it happens, but here in the UK (and to a lesser degree in Aus) If you want something that is in limited supply, your have to join a queue of like minded people waiting.
As an example, there were over 100 pre-orders for RS4's BEFORE the car was offiically announced, (the order book for the 400 UK cars was full in under 2 weeks from announcement)
This meant that anyone wainting until the official announcement did not see their cars for around 9 months after the first ones arrived.
The other reason it makes sense to pre-order, is from an economic angle.
If you choose to dispose of the new car before the demand has been met for new cars (this was around 14 months with the RS4) you can often sell your car for the same or more than you bought it for. The best example of this is Lambo Gallardo and Porche GT3's which are holding premiums of around 10-15K for good spec used cars.
At a more mundane level, the new Mini Cooper S Works a friend is selling has only dropped £1500 over 2 years and 27500 miles! This is because demand still outstrips supply.
So although a grand is painful, it is one way to ensure that you are fairly high up on any list if a car is officially announced, (as this one will befor the end of September IMHO). If it is not announced, you can always just ask for your money back, which if I were a betting man seems like a reasonable deal!

Dunc, your deposit is with the franchise at this stage - the supply of cars like RS's to franchises are restricted, therefore your local franchise might only get an initial allotment of 1 or 2 cars. If you've got your name down, you will get one of the first cars in the UK. If not, you will be on a waiting list or if you're unlucky, be told that they have all been sold (in the case of limited numbers).
Sheesh, I can't see how it can be foolish to leave a fully refundable deposit with a dealer - if it wasn't with him, it would probably get p1ssed against the wall ;-(

But the car isnt even annouced yet!!! I can understand people ordering cars once its been confirmed and annouced, but you guys dont even know what it will look like or what it will be powered by!
I hardly thing there is going to be a massive queue for a car thats is still some 2 years min away..

A friend of mine puts deposits on all kinds of supercars, announced or unofficial - he makes about £50,000 a year just selling them on once he has taken delivery - in many cases, he's sold them again before delivery. You need a wadge of cash for when it arrives, but for some cars like DB9, Bentley, lambo's etc you can make £10k. So it does make sense to oreder one early (if you have spare cash)
I am still waiting for the RS4 announcement, but from what I hear having owned an old one, its going to be disappointing. I think the RS3 should be wouth having, as 350bhp could easily be 420 with a little work - in a light car - yum yum
