I like the look of the R32 but......for my money the S3 wins .... and did.
Riz offset the residuals ( I don't think there will be any - ultimately and within a few months it will be an " old style" Golf ) against the fuel costs. I averaged 61 mph up to Oulton 181 miles at 36.7 mpg and coming back only 59mph ( had the extra journey from Oulton to the M6) and managed 37.1. I did only get 20mpg on the track though. If I end up keeping the S3 I'll do more track days and will upgrade the brakes.... I watched Duncan & Simon, but at the speed I did I had little problem with the standard ones.
Sorry Riz it makes no sense, if you need money go for a re mapped A3 T Sport, great cars, pocket the difference, but if you really fancy the R32 that's fine, go ahead but I think that you need to be more realistic and honest with yourself. Buying almost any type of new car is not economical sense!!!

Anyway Riz, I'll just give you a gentle reminder why I'm not rushing for an R32.. (your words on the 15th November..)
Went today to a VW dealer to look at a Golf R32..... obviously i had high hope`s as its `supposedly a better car` compared to the old dog (S3)...... but i cant seem to see what all the fuss was about...... all credit to the sales rep as he tried very hard to tempt me to make the move to the R32..... first impressions were not what i expected..... cheapy BMW type plasticy leather... not even electric..... standard wheel arches, grill`s, mirror as base models...... and i thought lets here the beast..... he rev`ed it very hard but its wasnt really that loud and nowhere like a M3...... i didnt bother asking him for a test drive and just told him i wouldnt get insured and walked away.

If the car doesnt give me that special feel right from setting eyes on it then im not intrested..... it may out performe and out handle the S3 etc but its noway a classier motor car...... even the front side lower grills where fake.... poo!

There nothing that really sparkles about the R32..... didnt do it for me and am glad to keep my S3 another few years.....

Changed my mind, simple as that really, after a more closer inspection i like it and the plus that i can get insured on it on my own policy.

There`s no replacement for displacement.

Think you should read tyresmoke in detail. Boominess of the R32 exhaust is well documented. In fact S4 Dreamer was complaining about it on Monday night.
Yes but thats in the cabin if i recall correctly around 2500rpms....... i never mentioned the inside noise but the exhaust itself.....

After oulton in the Wifes R32 I can say the only thing better than the is its more exclusive . But with a few quid spent on a chip and brakes the were off like rockets. worse than that Fat Cat in his TDI could keep up in a bl**dy diesel and he was getting 37mpg on the track. Fit and finish on the R32 are pants yes seats and steering wheel are good but this doesnt make up for the rest . Engine sounds great when you're in the mood or have a clear road but on motorway it drives you mad. have spent 3k on a decent upgrade for stereo to drown the noise out . the steering is good as it does turn in really well and can hold a pin sharp line but lack of turbo oomph does make it feel sluggish. as a play thing ( which is what it is for the wife ,as it definitley is a GIRLS CAR )its ok but as an every day runabout its flawed in every way, fuel economy to oulton got near 30mpg on motorway but around town lucky to see 20mpg , normally 17mpg on 6 mile run to work for the wife. Would I buy another VW? no way , i would by an if not so many as that is the only reason I bought the R32 as when I put the money down there was only to be 500 so until something better with 4wd and a turbo that has decent build quality and is limited in number it will have to do.
