Brake upgrades

Post by DuncS3 » Wed Mar 05, 2003 6:36 pm

Many of us talk about upgrading the brakes on our cars, and I have recently had a set of APR pads fitted to my S3. My impression of them is that they appear to have a bit more bite under normal braking conditions, which I prefer (but then again I drove a new Polo 1.4 the other day that could put you through the windscreen when compared to my S3)

I have taken my car out at Donington and the brakes lasted around 6 or so laps before fading (had to use the gearbox a bit then!), but generally I thought they held up pretty well.

Personally I dont get brake fade on the road, simply because I do not come across conditions (or roads ) that cause it, and I suppose you have to be braking quite hard and continiously to invoke this on the road.

I am under the impression that Porsche/Movit (etc.) brakes on a S3 dont feel much different (if at all) to standard brakes, apart form the fade, so if you dont track your car, is it purely a cosmetic modification (they do look the dogs) or is there more to it than that?

A cheaper option might be to put S4 brakes on the S3.

The two cars have the same sized front wheels, so they should fit.

The S3 disks are 312mm x 25mm but the S4 321mm x 30mm.

Certainly the S4 is a much heavier car, so I would imagine the brakes would have to be better (S3=1375kg, S4=1600kg)

And as luck would have it, I may have a set of calipers (not sure if these are different from the S3) and disks from an S4 for sale soon!

Would RS4 brakes fit an S3? If so I've got a set of standard RS4 brakes with 1k only on them for sale.

read the tuition thread - but its £25 - TBH i cannot imagine anyone woudl not recommend it if its your first time on the track.

Regarding these brakes - how do we check what will fit what? The new V6 TT alledgedly has Rs4 brakes fitted...

Couldn't be further from the truth. The standard discs and calipers will be built to a price rather than for ultimate breaking. Porsche/Brembo/AP/HiSpec etc build brakes that are in a completely different league as far as braking is concerned.....And they look the dogs
