Noisy gearbox

Post by S3MUD » Tue Feb 17, 2004 7:43 pm

Guys,

I have a year 2000 S3 which has currently covered just over 30000 miles and been recently serviced by Audi.

I find the gear change from 1st to 2nd is quite noisy or clunky. Clunks twice when shifting into place?

I asked the dealer to pay specific attention to the box and ensure the oil was changed. They found no faults.

Apparently the S3 box is quite clunky because of the 4 wheel drive or so my dealer told me.

The change improves slightly when the box oil heats but is still not great.

Can anybody advise their opinion on the change? Anyone experienced these symptoms before a major failure?

This is slightly spoiling an otherwise fantastic car!

Anybody attending the Windsor meet next week so we can compare?

Cheers

The S3 box does clunk a bit in 1st and 2nd, so does the TT.

So maybe its nothing to worry about?

Brendon, try another S3 to compare, that way you'll know for sure. The box is notchy, but not really clunky. IMHO, 4WD has feck all to do with that as it's FWD most of the time anyway.

All the best,

Ben
