MTM S3 - 350 BHP - Experiences ?

Post by Yogibaer » Fri Dec 26, 2003 3:19 am

Hi,

I´m considering an mtm-upgrade to my s3, does anyone of you have experiences with the 345 bhp tuneup ?

http://www.mtm-online.de/html/preislist ... ZID=S3155Q

Is it worth the 10'000 Euros ?

Thanks,
Yogi

or

B3VES on the UK TT forum who has had the big turbo conversion on his TTR.

Might be worth sending them a message.

Is it worth 10K? Thats a question no one else can answer for you mate.You need to figure out for yourself whether it makes sense or not.

What I can tell you is that the conversion moves the S3's ability up onto another plane(obviously with the complimentary chassis modifications in place),the car now pulls hard to 7000rpm,with power coming in from 3500rpm,below 3k rpm,obviously the car no longer has the instant response of a chipped 270bhp ish S3 so a change in driving style is required(a bit more use of the gearbox)the power delivery feels really progressive and linear,its not terribly laggy,it doesnt feel dead off boost.Its around town manners are actually greatly improved as the turbo is asleep,so rather than the ultra quick spin up and almost surge-y delivery of a tuned KO4'd car its very smooth and docile(with the exception of the paddle clutch,which in fairness you get used to after a day or two).

The cars 100mph plus performance is very impressive,on a road(sorry,private test track )I use,the car previously reached 135mph towards the end of a particular straight,it will now reach 145mph on the same stretch.

Tested back to back with an MTM chipped S3,it absolutely annhilates the chipped car,just pulls away from it.

Fuel economy driving normally has actually improved(due to it being off boost more)driving hard......dont even ask LOL.

any more questions just ask.

Also bear in mind that AMD in the UK now offer a 'big turbo' upgrade which is a bit cheaper than the MTM offering. In the UK AMD are as respected as MTM I would say.

Mine was the first 'Big Turbo' upgrade that AmD did - and it's a little bit more than 'Standard' - Let me elaborate: I have a FWD Golf 1.8T with in excess of 200bhp per litre.

2 Days ago I came across a Brabus CLK in my lane (the outside) on the M40. I was a little put out by his assumption (dismissive glance in the rear view mirror) that it was in fact his lane, so he proceeded to plant his right foot in the shag-pile. At 145 he must have said something to his other half, because SHE looked round! It must have been something on the lines of "Darling, that damn Peasant in that Golf has attached himself to my tow-bar. Realease the Hounds!" (or words to that effect). Funny as [censored] and really makes 2 years of development worthwile.

Nice one always good to hear
Im wanting an upgrade myself but can't afford it at the mo
Is there anyway I could buy all the parts and fit them myself (Im an engineer) save on all the labour charges, then get QST/AMD to remap it.
Bass.

@Bass

I fitted the big turbo kit to my car(I'm a mechanic) and to be honest its a pretty big job,you'll need a lot of tools and equipment,a two post lift,a transmission jack etc etc,its not just a case of whipping off a turbo and bolting on another one,you need to remove the subframe,the gearbox,modify/replace the various feed and return pipes,modify the transfer box housing etc etc .Besides I'd imagine both Amd and Qst would prefer fit the complete package for you.You're not going to save a fortune by fitting it yourself anyway,the main expense of this kit is in its component parts not the labour costs.

@petitbison

The paddle clutch is a Sachs 4 paddle plate made by them for MTM,it uses a sintered bronze friction material as opposed to the organic stuff used on the OE clutch.
You need to change the cover plate and release bearing at the same time(OE Audi parts are fine) and also change the bushes in the lower engine/transmission link back to the subframe. I cant remember the price of the clutch plate,think its in or around 250 quid?Kim at Qst can give you an accurate price and he normally has them in stock.

I've dug out some pics(none that recent,sorry)but I have no facility to host them,so if I can email them to someone could they stick them up?

Cheers
