First time upgrade!!!
First time upgrade!!!
Hi all,
i got myself my first S3 about a month ago now!!! It's lurrrrrvely....
Anyway I've got a bit of spare dosh and have been looking at treating myself to some upgrades. Where do I start???
Do I chip it first then look at wheels & brakes? Or Get wheels and brakes then chip it? Exhaust??? The confusion goes on....
What do you guys reckon? Would be interested in your comments and thoughts...
Many thanks

Re: First time upgrade!!!
Sense would say do brakes/suspension first and then look at upping the power with a chip & exhaust, purely so that you prep the car ready for the extra ponies.
Just a matter of what your priorites are ? Most people think that the standard brakes are OK for every day use (depends on how/where you drive I suppose). If your going to track it then a brake upgrade is a must IMO, standard ones fade very easily after a bit of pounding.
Cant remember what car you've come from, but if you leave it a while so that you get used to the cars current power, as and when you chip/remap it, it'll feel like a new car again with that factor coming right back.

Re: First time upgrade!!!
I would do brakes followed by chip.
if you do it the otherway round, your soon be putting your deposit down on the brakes anyhow.
also consider a DV if you got the cash.
exhaust would be last on list, there just isnt the gains on the S3 exaust to justify the £££'s
Thats how i have done it. Twice now.
welcome to RS246 by the way

Hello Tom and welcome to RS246.com
If you browse the forum you`ll find there has been much discussion on modifications,
I would personally go for a ECU tune first then see how the wear `n` tear parts go.... there are many tuning companies out there and all have different feel and factors to them
Revo and APR offer free trials but please check first by both tuning companies if the their trial software clashes with each other.
The Porsche front brake setup is probably the most talked about upgrade as its been praised alot.... the cost isnt so cheap though, the otherside of £1000 plus fitting if i recall correctly.
Milltek exhausts are also well known and carry a lifetime warranty which is always good.
There are so many combinations out there and my advise is to not rush into it all.... browse the forums and gather informations... make a list and then take it from there.
Any other questions feel free to ask.

Re: First time upgrade!!!
I agree with Riz and his trainers.
Go for the remap first (I did) - its the biggest fun upgrade you can do to your car.
You can always try fast road pads pretty cheaply too.

Re: First time upgrade!!!
I agree i went for the AMD re-map upgrade first and opted for EBC green stuff pads which makes the brakes more than enough for the roads.

Re: First time upgrade!!!
Go for the re-map, unless your a track day fiend. On the road people generally do not use the brakes anywhere near to their ability. Try it with one of your favourite corners:
Pick a braking point and use it to brake for the corner. You'll probably be braking too early. Adjust the braking marker until you are using the brakes to the maximum. Try not to crash (if you do, I disclaim all responsibility).
If you are doing the above already (crashing and that), then maybe the brake upgrade is the first thing to go for; if not, then chip it.

Re: First time upgrade!!!
i found the standard S3 brakes worrying in the wet. thats when you are most vunerable.
i didnt have much confidence in them.

Re: First time upgrade!!!
I went for the APR chip first, then Jetex panel filter. Went for the panel filter because you can't tell its there until you put your foot, so good if you still have warranty and want to keep the engine bay looking standard.
As Riz suggested, ring a few places first, I jumped straight in for the APR one without looking at any others, although I'm still more than pleased with it.
Also consider where you go, I went near Manchester, and without saying the companies name, there service and after care wasn't so 'Awesome' !!!!!
