My S3 is shaking?

Post by Riz_RS4 » Fri Jun 06, 2003 6:54 pm

Just filled up at the local Shell station. Upon exit the car felt ok but sluggish, got the the lights and all seemed ok until i passed around 3000rpms then the car began to wobby and shake violently
At first i thought the clutch went all in one go...... but i decided to pull up and had a look under the bonnet, the engine and exhaust were shaking violently whilest the rest of the car just wobbled..... engine sounds like a tractor.
Decided to switch the engine off then on again but still no result, the engine management lights hasnt come on either!
Limped home behind a L driver which was a good things as it might have been emarresing doing 30mph in a 60mph limit.
Got home and rang Audi Recovery up, they said that they will try and get a Audi Technician out to me a.s.a.p but it was also unlikely going to be tonight
Got i call later to say they cant do it today and that they will arrange me a car out!
Its going away to the dealers tomorrow.......

p.s. the Audi person on the phone also got me to check my fuel receipt too just incase i filled it up wrong! doh!
Also there a wierd smell lurking around the car!

Hope the garage had the right fuel in the right tanks! surely they must have failsafes!

Is it misfire or do you think more serious, when I had my 306XSI the Engine Management went wrong and the car would cut out over 3,000rpm, but below that it was just about driveable, made my trip from Oxford to Chichester a very long one!

Only weird smells I have come across in cars are either Clutch or Catalytic

Hope it all ends up ok and is not too serious though

Yes bad news, got a busy weekend and nextweek too, arranging to take the temp car back and pick mine up is going to be a problem.

Where do i stand if the dealership damages my car when they have it in? what are my rights?

It could be the clutch but seems very strange as the whole car shakes, cant really determine if the revs are correct.

Just a big shame really as i used to have a 206 and it didnt brake down once, this is my 2nd brakedown

hmm doesn't sound good - i was thinking maybe a couple of cylinders are misfiring (or not firing at all) but this surely would cause the engine mgmt light to come on. Also, bent input shafts are v.rare now.

do things calm down a bit when the clutch pedal is engaged?

keep us up to date with what happens.

nope its constantly shaking, almost crashed it when trying to park it at home, just find it hard to drive the car as its shaking that much its struggling to stay alive....

Hope its the coil packs, but would the car run on two?
The smell is like burning clutch or similar, maybe unburnt optimax fuel out of the exhaust.

Its going in tomorrow but the dealerships service department closes at 12.30, the RAC ppl are going to pick it from my house at 12.00 so theres no chance they will fix its until monday pm! but nextweek im in scotland until wednesday! bummer!

Really woried at the moment........... hope its not costly and definately hope its not the clutch..... would cause major fianantial problems!

the ECP (engine management light) stays off, nothing on the dash indicated a problems!

Man that sucks Riz, weird how the car went kapputt immediatley after u filled up, did the fuel smell normal? i mean like diesel ? Isnt there a possiblity that it couldbe the coil pack or packs? I have heard that the engine light doesnt always come on with a coil failure.
The burning smell could be the the disintegrated coil pack or the rubber grommet or something coz they r known to become brittle and crumbly once they have failed.
I hope u get it sorted quick.

Cheers Mo & everybody,
hope its ok soon.
I definately didnt fill up wrong, and its the same pump i always fill up from. cant imagine that the truck put diesel in instead of optimax!

Could be coil packs, maybe two at once!
Its really depressing, i like my car alot and look after it

Keep us posted as to whats going on, and with regards to not being able to give the hire car back etc dont worry about that too much, audi assistance are very helpful in my experience and will try to accommodate ur needs.

Riz,

From your description think its almost certain to be the coil packs. They just go like that.

One went on my car a few months back. I simply turned the key one morning, engine spluttered and sounded awful. Drove round the block, misfiring and juddering.

If two have gone in your car, thats seriously unlucky mate.

Hope its the coil packs and maybe two have gone as the car is really sick......... will the dealership just put them in, or should they check at parts related to this failure........ car is in warranty, what if this has cause excessive wear on the clutch? or caused unburned fuel to go through the whole system and thru the cats/exhausts......... that could explain the bad smell...... oh no could be the cats have drowned in optimax

p.s. i shall do a full review of which hire car they give me! so far ive had in the past

Tried the car again today...... flippin `ell sounds well diesel`ish! and it definately smells like unburnt fuel coming out of the exhaust.

Just a update.
Car is at the dealers with a broken engine under tray too!
Flippin RAC broke it!
First truck tured up and it was a front tower, when he lifted the car the bar broke the undertray! he only realised that he couldnt tow the car as it was 4WD! doh!
Waited over a hour for the flatback truck to turn up!
Car is now waiting at the dealers to be looked at monday

On a side note i had a look at the new A3 2.0FSi.... its well nice and i think im going to book a test drive!
They also got a Mugello Blue RS6 Avant in @ £59,995!

I had the EXACT Same problem. Its COIL PACKS for sure. You feel no boost and turbo is shaking at 3000rpm

Riz - I have the same problem where the whole car was wobbling more than normal and the exhaust was spluttering. It concerned me and I called Audi roadside assistance.

The guy assured me it was coil packs so he located which cylinder was misfiring (number 2) and changed the coild pack. To my horror it was the same as before and the Audi guy looked puzzled.

He ended up taking the coilpack out and checking the spark plug and it was shagged - he did not even know how the cylinder was firing at all!

He changed the plug and all was well! I don't think you have too much to worry about. This happens all the time.

Woooohoooo its back and feels nice, it was Coil pack 2 that was faulty.
Also got a estimate for the damage caused by the first RAC truck!
£232.61 yikes! lets hope RAC pay up!

Car feels alot smoother now!
