2002 S3 very difficult to change down to 5th gear from 6th

I have just bought a 2002 modded S3. When driving at say 60mph and you start to slow and try to drop to 5th gear its either very notchy or almost impossible to get it into 5th. I was speaking with a VW mechanic and he reckons its bauk rings in the gearbox. Anyone else come across this or have any ideas? Gear change up is always very smooth.
