Hi All,
Engine out pics as promised. 2 broken chain tensioners and one slightly work chain.
Should be all back together by the weekend.
Cheers.

Wow it really is scary seeing the chains like that, out of sight out of mind.
I'm off to get an oil service...........

Thanks for sharing this. Hopefully you'll get another 100K + once it's all back together.
I must say this is the second set of pics I've seen of broken guides/tensioners and is a little worrying. In both cases the plastic guides seem to have snapped (rather than worn or crumbled) and I wonder if oil changes are really going to reduce the chances of this kind of failure.
I lifted this from Wikipedia re: synthetic oil:
Potential stress cracking of plastic components made of polyoxymethylene (POM) in the presence of polyalphaolefin (PAO).
Ok, probably not relevant if we're using top-notch modern oils, but who knows what was used during the entire life of the car.
It will be interesting to see if the replacement timing parts have been improved or strengthened.
Hope the re-assembly goes well

Hi.
Thanks for your feedback. I researched this very well before I committed to the spend and I have seen that the plastic cam tensioners seem to be an issue. The strange thing is that the tell-tale signs did not occur, I.e. rattling chains, etc. maybe I was lucky and just caught it before the engine may have gone bang.
I have to say Audi have been absolutely perfect. They have provided fixed prices to do all the work and have stuck to the schedule and they have also given a very nice brand new A6 courtesy car to bomb around in.
Hopefully it will be all back together by the weekend and it should also cure the annoying startup rattle that you get on the S4's.
On and by the way, I have serviced the car at the scheduled intervals and made sure that the correct oil was used at all times. I also checked this on the Audi service record from the previous owner.
Look like I might be a bit unlucky but hopefully another 100k will beckon. Saving up to wrap it next year and stick my 19" MTMS on.
Thanks again for your feedback.
