Stupid tyre noob question?

Hi there,

Just about to pick up my ABT B6 next week and was wondering about tyres...

When I pick it up it will be on the standard Avus 235 40 18 winter rubber but it has a second set of wheels for summer boots. Two have new Michelin on (i'd presume ps2s didn't pay much attention to that or indeed sizing) and the others are rims waiting to be clad...

After searching and being hounded by the pub expert with "ideas" My question is two fold:

1. is it unadvisable / stupid / downright dangerous to be running wider rubber at the rear?
2. If so, or not as case may be, should all 4 tyres be the exact same make, type / tread pattern etc?

Very new to this so bare with me if this is stupid..
Thanks in advance :)

I'd use all the same tyres, I've heard that mixed tread patterns can upset Torsens

One of the items on the Audi approved used pre-delivery checklist is that on Quattros: "All four wheels must be fitted with tyres of the same type, make and tread pattern".

How much of a difference this really makes is arguable, but it's safest to try and make sure they're pretty evenly matched on a Quattro. Especially if that's the official Audi line, then you may run the risk of insurance issues if you ever had to claim (although it would be a ridiculously overzealous insurance inspector that would notice something like that!)

I doubt that wider rubber at the rear would be a problem, I know the BMW M cars have wider rears, and as long as the diameter of the tyres is the same at the front and rear then the Quattro would be fine.

Yeah this is what I was wondering... My history of M and Hartge cars always had wider rubber at the back, however were RWD yet I notice this also is the case on 9114Ss and turbos..

Problem is I have no Idea and can't find what the original set-up on the ABT was, brakes, suspension, roll bars, wheels are all different. Guess I'll just have to raid through the old bills and paperwork in German to try and see what's used and different on there, perhaps there is a receipt for old rubber.. I also have a suspicion they may be larger rims.

I might end up changing all 4 depending on the exact Michi wear.. has anyone had any experience with p Zeros on here? on other cars I always found these leagues ahead...
