Hi all

Can anyone tell me some more information regarding error codes on a B6 S4?

On the lookout for an S4 and one locally has come to my attention - the guy is wanting to sell it as keeps getting EML on. Now i normally wouldnt entertain buying a car with EML on but its a bit of bargain and not far away so can check it out throughly before buying.

Its apparently coming up with P1340 and P1347. Which is the following codes:

Bank 2 camshaft/crank angle sensor wrong combination of ecu's p1347
camshaft/crank angle sensor wrong combination of ecu's p1340.

To me that sounds like possibly the chain tensioners are out - but i wanted to get some insight into the potential causes and worst case scenarios.

Firstly how much is it to get the chain tensioners replaced on the S4? secondly if he has been driving around with this problem what could happen? what else is worth checking on it?

if its not the tensioners what else could it be?

Walk away. The potential saving you are making will probably be swallowed up rectifying the problem as I imagine to change the faulty sensor(s) etc will require the engine being pulled.

Yeah, I'd expect also that replacing the tensioners would be an engine out job too, as the engine has to come out if you replace the chains...

I have read that the tensioner can be replaced with the engine in situ. My reference to pulling the nengine was with respect to the camshaft/crank angle sensor.

I am not sure why the OP believes that replacing the tensioner is the solution to a camshaft/cranks angle sensor fault. I appreciate that if the tensioner is shot then the chain will slip causing timing, camshaft problems. But at the same time if the tensioner has gone I would expect a few more fault codes and possibly bents valves etc. I.e. probably catastrophic failure.

Either way the OP should walk away, unless they are going to fix it themselves. The seller is probably getting rid becasue of the costly repair.
