After some insight from owners and other potential buyers.

I've been car hunting for probably 2 months now, going from different car every week as cant make up my mind. Recently i was looking at Golf GTi's but after seeing a B6 S4 up close the other day i have fallen back in love with what was actually my first choice as a replacement for my current diesel.

Now the values even in that short time seem to have dropped but what is evident is the big gap in pricing for similar models. I have around 9k to spend and hope to get an 03/53 plate S4 with under 100k in pretty decent condition.

I found online a nice 2003 S4 with few extras, 97k miles at a garage for £9,995. Now the car seems mint, FASH, warranty and full mot and tax. But i have access to Glass' guide and with the extra options it has its coming up with following prices....

p/ex excellent - £,5995
Private sale - £7,250
Dealer Price - £8,250

Now i used to use glass' a lot and rely on them for decent values but this seems to indicate a lot of S4's are overpriced? is this another case of a classic car that doesnt have a decent glass value and that they sell for much more than this? or does it show that the car at the garage is overpriced?

I paid just less than £11k for mine 2-3 weeks ago. It's a 53 plate with 43k on the clock and FASH plus some additional bits and bobs from specialists. Car looks in mint condition. Glass guide put mine at £11500 so I am about smack on the money. I only wanted to spend £10k but that extra £1k makes a massive difference if you can stretch to it.

Thanks for the info - seems good price you got there especially for mileage.

Unfortunately 9k is pretty much right at top of budget at moment which is a shame as around 10k you start getting ones like yours coming up. Not sure though if those around 10k-11k would be happy with offers of 9k.....

I bought a hi spec (NAV, TV, Coolbox in glovebox etc etc) 53 plate with 87K on it for 8250 in October - was advertised on Pistonheads - came with new clutch, and 4 newish Toyo T1R's too

It's a question of keep looking, you'll find one at sensible money soon enough. That said, I talked a couple of guys down a thousand quid in 30 seconds on the phone.

For all 3 of the S4's I've had (2 B5's and now a B6) I've had to travel, so if you're prepared to travel you can save a few quid.

What I noticed is that the saloons are a good £1.5K to £3K less than the avants, I did actually want an avant but when this saloon came up at this price I couldn't refuse it.

Have a look at Pistonheads.com classifieds and check the classifieds on here and Autotrader and you'll find one - I even see a few pop up on eBay weekly.

I agree with AKA, bargains to be had over xmas. Mine was advertised at £12k for a couple of months. 43k miles, Sat Nav, cream leather, cool box, FASH, loads of receipts for other bits, immaculate inside and out. I was looking at talking them down as much as I could, hoping for a deal around £11k. They then reduced it to £11k in December, I called and put a holding deposit on it the same day it was reduced with a view to going in a couple of days later for a test drive etc. In those few days they had 4 other people interested and one made an offer over the phone.

Whilst I couldn't get them to move on £11k (we spent half an hour trying whilst we were sat in front of them cash in hand so to speak), I got them to chuck in a 5* warranty (not sure how much piece of mind this actually gives but it's at least something), service, MOT, fix the glove box hinge and touch up a couple of small stone chips.

I don't think I got the best deal ever but I am happy with it and that's the best you can hope for in my opinion. There was only one other advertised that I really liked but it was in Prestwick in Scotland, for the right deal I was preparred to spend the cash on fuel to get there as cars are always cheaper up north.

Its an interesting subject- i've used Parkers for my quotes,(B7 (2005) 4.2, 136k, sat nav, all the trimings) - has been the love of my life - so been well cared for (FSAH), the number breakdown as follows:

I am looking to sell, but in no rush and happy to wait out till i find the right buyer- and dont want to sell to some numptie who's going drive it into the ground. Just been serviced too! .

Been looking myself recently again and i think have now found the right car at reasonable price for me.
But the valuations still vary widely the glass and parkers come up fairly similar (8500-10500) but did hpi check and that came back with a valuation of 12600!!
Mind you i suppose if you feel you have paid what you can afford and is right for that car then it doesnt matter.

I'm shocked how low prices are at the moment, I'm sure it's down to fuel prices. I looked on Autotrader this morning and there was a B7 loaded with 40K for £14K, very cheap!

A Guide(Glass's, CAP, Parkers) is Only a "Guide"... The Guide that really counts is the market place.

And prices are currently UP... The new year is never a "good" time to get a deal. Although there are always exceptions to this rule.
