I'm actually a B5 RS4 owner, but a friend of mine is looking at buying a 2003 S4 Avant, 75k mles. £12,500 i think. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

the search button is your friend, there are loads of threads covering this, but the key things are:

hpi, aux rad, flywheel, coil packs and starter motor
