I don't know if it's a coincidence but, since I stopped using a/c all the time, there's a funny smell in the cabin; a kind of fuel smell.
I'm not sure if it is fuel but it's got that 'tang'.
Is this something anyone else has experienced?

sure its not the bacteria buildup from the aircon system? you can get cans of cleaning stuff from Euro Car Parts that are easy to use and get rid of that funky mouldy smell.

I can smell it in the engine bay and around the outside of the car when I park up.
I definitely smells like fuel or a similar agent.

DIAGNOSED!!
I took it into my local VAG specialist (http://www.independentgarageservices.co.uk/) and the technician found the problem in under 10 seconds!
One of the injectors is leaking at the top so they're going to replace the top and bottom seals of the whole bank.
It's a relief just to get it diagnosed - and I'm pleased it's on top of the engine too.
