I have asked in the modding section but had no answers yet.

Why do tiptronic cars have vacuum flaps on the rear boxes but manual cars don`t ? What do they do ?

Manuals do mate. They just make it quieter below certain rev's and then open to make it sound better and flow better at higher rev's.

Well we had a B6 S4 cab manual in last week which had original pipes and it had no flaps !! ??
thats why I asked. The S4 is a very rare sight in mid wales , so haven`t had chance to look at another.

It might be that cab's manuals don't have them but my avant does. If you do a search in this forum you will find a topic on the exhaust flap's. I think there were some model's that didn't have them but can't be sure which one's.

I think chunky is on to something. The whole point of the flaps is add to the aural effect. In a cab, top up or down, the soundproofing is not as good as the tin tops so less need for the flaps.

My old 6 speed 2003 V8 had exhaust valves.

A quick look at EKTA suggests the early V8 S4, 6 speed, auto and cabbys had the exhaust flap
From about 11/03 it was just the autos.
