My car has developped a missfire and the engine light has come on. From having a quick look through this site i ordered a coil pack from audi. Is there any way of finding out which pack is at fault without vag-com?. I know i can just do the plug and play trick but there's 8 of them and the electrical connections are bloody tight.

Thankfully my mates girlfriend works at audi at got mine for £26. It's going to be a real arse ache trying all of them but it looks like the only option. Anyone know if the engine management light will go out on it's own when i have changed the coil??

Yes it will show on vag-com and yes the light will go out, as long as it's the coil causing the problem!

i have gone through all the packs with a new one test and then replacing. it seemed to sort the misfire for 10 mins or so but then it came back again. The light stayed on all the time. I now have the Air bag and esp light on after removing the air box . The car will start but runs like a bag of <beep>.

I really have no idea. I have posted for some help from someone with vag-com in the vag-com section but had no reply yet.

Its times like this that makes a small £10 investment in a fleabay cable worthwhile. The soft-ware is free from the Rosstech site. It will allow you to scan and clear faults. Also the Rosstech database will allow you to interpret the codes and diagnose the problem for yourself. If you want more functionality you can firstly buy a license, $99, for the shareware. This opens up more features of the shareware software. If you then want even more functionality that is offered from the latest software/cable then the license fee is subtracted from the price. If you go the whole hog then it will have only cost £10.

I ahve been talking to a guy from audi and he say'a they change all coils now even if one has failed due the them being sensitive. The other problem has come up cause i un plugged the maf. Got to go and pick the 7 new coils tomorrow but still need the codes wiping.

Dunc,

Glad to hear it's almost sorted (Albeit £240 later!)

Just wanted to say that I went onto fleabay to source a cable for myself and saw that a new CAN type cable connector came in 2003-4. Not sure the £10 fleabay cable would do for the S4, you may need the more expensive £35 CAN compatible cable.

I am sure that someone from this site will know exactly which type cable is required for the S4 and be able to tell me before I make the mistake myself!

I have a 2003 S4 and bought a USB OBD2 KKL Interface. I believe that his will also do certain B7's or the basics on a B7. This thread is really helpful. http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158766

Update. I have now changed all 8 coil packs and the car seem's to be running ok. Still have the warning lights on the dash cause i've not had any luck with someone coming and resetting the fault codes.
BlingBling - can you re set codes with the cable you have? also, what other functions does the lead/software give?
