XL Tyres?

A bit long winded, but Ill give it a go - Recently bought my S4 from an Audi dealership and some weeks after had queried the condition of the tyres with them. On going to my local Audi dealership, they went one further and told me that I had the incorrect tyres fitted full-stop!

The tyres fitted at present are Dunlop 235/40/18 93W, but according to my local dealership, they should be 95Y XL (as per the spare, which is Michelin Pilot Sport)

Most importantly, they said they have to XL.

I do not understand tyres that well, but know the XL have stiffer side walls and also had rea that incorrect speed rating etc could have implications on the insurance, in the event ........

I am still in discussions to get these replaced as I believe the car should have been supplied with the correct tyres.

To give me a stronger argument, can anyone give any advice?

If your local dealer will put their statement in writing you may get some help, they probably won't replace them but that may depend upon how worn they are. If new tyres were fitted prior to purchase your have more clout but if they haven't changed them you might be stuck. Personally they are not too far off OEM spec and I believe the S4 max's out at 165mph

If they had fitted the wrong size then you do have a good case for replacement, this happened to me on my first S4. They fitted 215's instead of 235's, only realised after kerbing a wheel, still the car ended up back on their forecourt and eventually sold for a lot less than I paid

S4 b6 homologation says "235/40/18 91 Y". So even if all of us know that it does not need "Y" and that "W" rated tyres are enough, it is still necessary to follow that recommendation. The only exception I am aware of is for winter tyres.
About the weight "93" is Ok. The point is that in such dimensions most manufacturers release them at "95" rate. XL is not at all mandatory as a "95 tyre" supports already more than requested ("91" is expected to do the job)
What is good with XL tyres, is that most of the time, they come with rim protection

They are right but I would just fit the right load rating and XL when they tyres get to 3mm. My B6 S4 is on its fifth set of tyres and IIRC I didn't pay enough attention on the 3rd set and didn't fit XL. I really could not tell the difference when driving but made sure I was more on top of things subsequently.

PS Its not helped when the Kwik Fit tyre finder will give you a range of tyres all with different load ratings when you put your reg number in.
