Prefered Engine Oil
Prefered Engine Oil
Looking at the handbook, it states VW 501 01 engine oil. What do you use which is easily found at Helfrauds, Homebase, garages etc?

I used to use Castrol Edge 5w 30 but am off the variable service and now use Fuchs Titan Race Pro S 5W-40 Ester Synthetic Engine Oil, as recommended by Opie Oils.
It'll also help if you have the tensioner rattle on startup.

For the first time since I've had it (45k, 3 yrs) I've needed to top up my car with oil - no idea why as my driving hasnt changed.
Anyway, I looked into the oil it uses: the local Audi garage uses Castrol SLX 5W-30 (about £21 for a litre bottle), which in Halfords retails as Castrol Edge (about £17 for a litre bottle).

Does it make much difference? My car rattles like crazy, despite having had a new chain and tensioners and differnt types of oil tried at about 60k. I always cringe whenever I hear it.It'll also help if you have the tensioner rattle on startup.

It's not fully eradicated but it's quieter and shorter and sometimes it doesn't do it at all.
The fella at Opie Oils said it was the ester content which helped. He said I could go for 5w 30 or 5w 40 so I went for the latter (thicker) to be sure.
Mine's done more then twice your mileage. You might wanna get a bespoke recommendation from them but I'd have thought they'd suggest the same.

Thanks. Mines actually on about 90k - I got it with 35k on the clock - but will drop them a line and see what they say.biyitch wrote: The fella at Opie Oils said it was the ester content which helped. He said I could go for 5w 30 or 5w 40 so I went for the latter (thicker) to be sure.

If you use a different oil manufacturer, can you just top up, or would you recommend flushing it through and changing it completely. I'm on variable too, and probably need a service in about 4k.
