Have a friend who just have bought a S4... But when he start it in the morning, when the engine is cold, it has a strange noise.. It seems to come from the chain.. But it disappear when it has oilpressure. Is it the chain tensioner, there are bad?

Nothing bad it is a usual noise. The time the oil get into some chain tensioners you have this strange noise. Except that it is annoying, it does not seem to have any effect on the lifespan.
It looks like Audi "solves the issue" for all the models afterwards (S5, RS4, R8 ) but did not want to do it for the S4.
If you search a bit in the forum you will see numerous posts about that.

Hi Matias,
Mine was quite bad, sounded very metallic with a couple of loud clunks. It is being dealt with by my dealer under warranty. Engine out, new chains, tensioners and other assoc bits. Should be getting it back soon i hope, been missing it.

Sorry to jump on this thread, but someone may have some experience of this too.......
My S4 seems to have developed a whine/whistle when reducing revs. Its very soft in sound, almost like someone blowing over the top of a bottle
i.e. Driving along in 3rd gear at 20 mph, slow down, revs reduce and from 1500 rpm till 850rpm (tickover) there seems to be a whine/whistle noise. This continues for a couple of secs at tickover before dissapearing.
I think it may be alternator or something similar?
I've discounted the tensioner belt issue, as it only does it when warm and not just at 1250rpm (in fact, as soon as I raise the revs the noise dissapears anyway)
Is anything else belt driven? maybe a loose belt. Power steering possibly?
The noise only lasts for around 4 secs, so no chance of getting out of the car and under the hood to hear where its coming from.
Any ideas?

Did the noise evolve with time or all the sudden you experienced that the loud clunks ?

Think my issue is fuel filter. (marrowed the noise down to the rear of car as opposed to front).
Seems they maybe prone to whistling if getting blocked.
Hope you sort your noise out soon

I bought it only recently, didn't do it when i road tested it, only noticed it after a few days. It only happens when the engine has been standing for an hour or two after a run. It doesn't do it from cold or when hot.
I was at the dealer yesterday to talk to the technician. They have replaced all the chains (4 i believe) and tensioners. Also changed the inlet manifold which apparently has some flaps that could have been faulty. Yet it sounded exactly the same. I've left it with them to talk to Audi in Germany for the next move. So I'm stuck in an A6 2 litre diesel for a while longer i guess, very boring!!
I am glad I'm not picking up the bill, he told me the inlet manifold alone is over £1k.

Just hope they won't try to solve "the usual noise"
Ask them to change the oil for some 5w40 oil. It should stay longer in the tensioners than the default 0w30 recommended for our car...

I wouldn't mind if it was just a rattle, I could probably live with that but the noise mine makes makes you cringe, it's embarassing, people look round and stare.
