I have done a lot of ringing round and found the AA to be pretty competitvly priced. they wanted £519 for two years cover, upto £3k a claim. Unlimited claims, upto the value of the car.

I though that was pretty good??

But whats going to go wrong, that's only going to cost £3000?

Timing chains on start up, that will make a big hole in that.

But £3k per claim is a fair old chunk - unlimited amount of claims as well.

Being new to Audi and coming from porsche, I thought that was pretty good??

Just cancelled my aa warranty !! Thieving tw*ts.Been paying for three years on my W8 passat, claimed when my fuel gauge went off, told me to go to their approved dealer for repair, they said it was one thing that wasn,t covered but charged me £100 anyway for work done.Took it to the main dealer & it was something that was covered but AA wouldnt pay anyway !!!

I beat Warranty Direct down on price and up on cover by showing them the Tesco warranty.

I have no idea how well Tesco perform in the event of a claim but the cover is clear, comprehensive and very cheap. Key things that I had liked about them (for Finest cover) were that the cover said what they didn't do (much easier than spotting what isn't included), there was no claim limit up to the value of the car, it permitted the use of franchised dealers and full cover kicked off immediately with no grace period for wear and tear.

I ended up going with Warranty Direct because they have the reputation, matched the price and, near as makes no odds, the cover. All for £419.

I got the cover because it was privately bought car and I figured that money spent on a warranty got you a fix. Money spent on an inspection just tells you the problems. Felt like better insurance after using this forum's collective wisdom to check the car to the best of my abilities.

Yep, providing that Audi can actually fix it, mine's been in several times, engines been out and chains and tensioners replaced and it's now slightly worse. Would they pay for that?

PS. anybody aware if Audi have found a cure yet?

Hi Andy,

The timing chain rattle is well known with the S4 on start up. It's nothing to worry about and is just the tensioner getting up to pressure.
The reason why the AUDI dealership is "fixing it" is because they get loads of money for old rope.
They probably explain to Audi that it's something else like a chain slip with vave damage or something - laughing all the way to the bank.

Anyway my S4 cab (2005) has always rattled for a few seconds on cold start.

Regards, Chris.

My car also makes a godawful noise on startup, but having read the input from this site,I am reassured that it is perfectly normal, thank god.But back to the original question, avoid the AA cover for the simple reason they will avoid paying ,dont know if this is the case with warranty direct, only time will tell, but I keep hearing good reports about them !!

Hi all,
I realise this is an oldish thread but just thought I'd update it a bit. My S4 avants waranty is due up next March so i approached Sunderland Audi about extending it and was given a price of £1300 for 1 year, next up was Tesco who wouldn't provide a warranty as their max capacity is 3.5 litres so next up was warranty direct. I have put a refundable deposit down on a 26 month Audi dealership and uncapped labour warranty (2 free months) for the price of £1200, so i have untill march next year to get a better/cheaper deal if not then I'll stay with them. I was also given a cheaper price, about £200 less, if I used independant garges as opposed to using the audi ones.
Also could anyone give me a price for supply and fitting front break pads and aslo how long do they normally last, the wife does most of the driving and doesn't use them that often!!

Cheers

Paul
