Could be a thing to do on a wet afternoon.
Ring round a few Audi dealers to see how many quote for a cambelt change?

I think the dealer may be on the hunt for some work there.
Almost a trading standards issue.

Having just come from a Golf R32, which is also chain-driven, they also don't need replacing.
Forgetting the fact that there was a manufacturing fault on a batch of R32 cam tensioner gears (that also affected the TT 3.2Q), fixing it was a painful, expensive job.
VW recommended a new engine if it went, because the balance of the labour charge was so much.

Having the tensioners done at the moment on my A3 3.2 DSG (73K miles), all under warranty thank goodness...

before i bought my S4, and before i knew that they were chain driven i telephoned Harper and Hebson Audi at Carlisle, and they told me it was due at 60K. Agin i wonder what labour would be? bandits!

Please excuse my ignorance on this, but is the upshot of this mean that the chains DO NOT require replacing at all?

They do not require regular replacement i.e not on a service schedule, all components can fail prematurely and require replacement i.e. nothing lasts forever.
Cambelts are probably a lot cheaper than chains (also quieter in operation) but don't last as long. The manufacturer saves money making the car and get's a second bite of the cherry when we get the belt changed because having it snap doesn't bear thinking about...

But as far as I know, you still have accessory belt to do. Not as often as an cam belt but...
Taking into account what is required to have access to it, it probably costs a bit

Nidfix (or anyone), do you know at what mileage/age the accessory belt should be changed then?
