hi,
just got my S4 and im a bit concerned about the gearbox/clutch.
The gearchange is really tough to get in gear, like theres a big notch before slipping into gear.
Its a lot worse first thing in the morning when its been sat for a while.
Once its warmed up a bit its smoother but still not slick.
Not sure if its just a trait of the S4 or if its a problem.
I have warantee on the car but havent driven another S4 to compare it too.
Also, when it is cold it feels like it crunches slightly (only VERY slightly as it goes into gear) when accelerating and changing to second.
Any advice ??? things to check, test, take back to dealer ??
Stiff gear change
You're not alone. I felt exactly the same way when I picked up my S4 in August - 2nd and 3rd being particularly stiff making quick changes tricky .... although sometimes it goes in sweet as a nut.
To be honest, after 3 months I don't really notice it so much, I think my gearchanges have become more precise to compensate - making sure the clutch goes right down before changing etc.
Interestingly I'm driving an 06 A4 TDI (yuk) at the moment while my S4 has some warranty work done and the gearchange feels almost the same as the S4.
What's the mileage on your car? Mine was 20K when I bought it and I reckon that the 'box will lighten up with time. My previous car was a '97 A4 with >110K on the clock so I suppose there would be quite a difference hopping from old to new.

The S4 'box is not the smoothest you'll ever come across, and it will always be worse after the car's been dormant for a while because of the oil. Never found it to be that much of an issue though, could well be worth you trying someone else's car, maybe at one of the meets organised on here? Or at your local dealer?
