Anyone know where I can get a detachable towbar fitted to a B6 S4 if possible?
Cheers,
James

Towbars aren't meant to be possible according to Audi. I'm not sure where it puts your insurance wise. It has been done though. The last one I saw I think was on audi-sport.net

Just read that previous thread - found it interesting as when my B6 S4 was in for two rads to be replaced (stone in one and warranty job on other) i mentioned the number of rads it has (4) the mechanic said that Audi had to fit the two extra side rads as the engine was over heating when being used with a tow bar and caravan etc.
Mine is a 03 B6 Avant.

so it's all a bit unclear isnt it !! from what spikeys mechanic says it looks like the problem (over-heating) has been addressed by adding more cooling capacity.
If so, why are some people being advised not to use a towbar ??
my dutch dealer didnt say anything when I asked for the towbar to be fitted (car was 2nd hand purchase). Of course it could be ignorance of the potential problem, but you'd think they had some way to check when a customer has bits added to the car at purchase.
So, physically its possible; I know because I've got one.
It's then just a question whether you'll end up with an overheating problem or not (ie how much load you're intending to drag around). I only use mine for bike racks and the like, with occasional use on a small trailer for taking c**p down to the local tip.
mine's also a 2003 B6 (saloon).

Thanks guys. I too only intend to carry a bike rack so won't be planning on stressing it too much. Those of you who have got towbars - do you know who manufactured them? Bosal? Witter? Or other?

no photos I'm afraid, but I found this link to the installation & operating instructions for the towbar I had fitted by Audi. Interestingly, when you use the vehicle search tool on the Westfalia web-site there is no Audi S4 listed; if you enter via the A4 B6 model there is a list of compatible bars, of which this is not listed.... Also note that on page 20 of the linked document it only mentions A4 (B6), not S4. Whether this is simply linked to the cooling issue or something else I dont know; all I do know is I have this model fitted to my S4 (B6) Saloon without any apparent problems - end of disclaimer

There must be towbar option, because my spare wheel has a polystyrene type insert with a space for the detachable part.

That's a standard insert used on A4's (which do have a tow bar option) as well as S4's (which don't have a tow bar option).

My B7 S4 Avant has a detachable towbar (not my choice) and if towbars are your thing it looks like a good install. Audi have approved towbars for S4s - it is possible to spec one up as factory fit or as dealer fit. If you go on
www.audi.co.uk and select New Cars, A4, A4 Accessories (middle of the page) you will be presented with a list of options - at the bottom it quite clearly states TOWBARS.
I'm getting mine removed which means taking the rear bumper off first.
