9.3mpg LOL

Post by Amosu » Mon Feb 14, 2005 1:11 pm

No wonder I am only averaging 16mpg in my S4 Avant...

There I am merrily minding my own business on my way home when out of nowhere a Caterham 7 appears in my rear view mirror and flashes me.

Not one to decline a challenge, I changed down and off we go... As there are several roundabouts in my area, whilst I was waiting for him to catch me up at one of them, I reset my trip computer so it was displaying current MPG.

Results are scary! Next section of dual carriageway, I pushed to the max through 1st, 2nd, 3rd and then 4th and when I glanced down was showing the 9.3mpg...

Swicthed to no. 2 display for overall average fuel consumption and looks like in the 5 weeks I have had the car I'm only averaging 16 :D

I better not tell the wife that's the reason I keep having to go and fill 'er up!!!

And the result of that little confrontation was.....?

If I remember the stats correctly, those Caterhams are under 4 secs to 60 but top out at a ton...

When i ran at VMAX at Bruntingthorpe last year with Pistonheads, i averaged 6.1MPG for the day on the track

Like Scotty, i'll see what i can do at Combe this weekend. I'm expecting around 8MPG on the track as a day average

Sorry guys my son had to go hospital for an emergency op so been with him since I posted

Either the driver was a pansy, or his car was suffering. I left him for dead all three times he was 'in my boot' and floored it. Could be he was holding back a little as the road was a little damp - or maybe he didn't have the bottle to keep up after 120... :D

I havent yet had a chance to push even harder and see if I can go lower than 9.3mpg, but I'm sure I'll get an opportunity soon :)

Apparently you can get it to 8 in top gear on the M40 early in the morning I've heard... :sekret:

Thanks. Tonsils & adenoids out and grommits in. Not uncommon, but hard to explain to a two year old who goes to sleep ok and wakes up in agony :(

Hmm... I wonder if 'someone' could do the same on the M4? :p

LOL

Had 4 inches down my way the other morning. Whilst everyone else looked like they were driving on an ice rink, I bombed past em on my way to the station :D

Turn off traction control etc and floor it... get 0MPG then :p

Remember when the ABS kicks in, Quattro will slow you no quicker than a 'normal' car. Most accidents people have in Quattros', Subarus' etc in the snow is that they forgot that great traction does'nt mean better braking. I wish I could have switchable ABS for those snowy days.

Ref Caterham, Pete S is spot on - I have a SV with 1.8VVC; 155 bhp and 550kg. IMHO way faster than the S4 on the twisty stuff, but it is geared circa 20mph per 1000 rpm so really slows down over the ton.

Chalk and cheese though; love them both to death.
