S4(B6) Winter Wheels/ Tyres/ snowchains question

does anybody have experience fitting smaller wheels (17") to the B6 S4 ? I want to get myself a set of winter wheels that allow me to use snow chains if required (seen the other posts that they may never be used - I still want the option). My user manual (dutch) says I can use chains only on 7J*17 wheels (ET38) with 225/45/17 tyres, and the local dealer found 7*17 Avus wheels on his computer as an after-market S4 option (250 quid each ). [note chains go on front wheels only].

Couple of questions:

1/ notwithstanding what Audi say, has anybody successfully run snow chains on a B6 S4, and on what wheels/ tyres ?

His tyre fitting guidelines give the ideal rims for 235/45/17 as 7.5" upwards, suggesting 7" is too narrow. A couple of wheel places I've contacted are also surprised when I "insist" on 7*17 - any thoughts on why Audi state 7" , and could this lead to other problems during normal use of these wheels ?

3/ Finally, I noticed an S3 the other day in Holland with 235/45/17 wheels. Anybody know what size wheels and ET they are as it may give me more options when looking round on e-bay !!

I know it's a bit sad replying to my own message , but for completeness here is how it ended. Bit the bullet and went for the Audi delivered Avus 7*17" wheels (ET38). Expensive (200 quid each) but couldn't easily find any other short-term option. Fitted Michelin Pilot Sport Alpin 2's (winter tyres) ordered and deliverd by internet, fitted on new wheels by Audi (about 60 quid). These were my first experience of winter tyres and I was surprised how much grip they gave on snow last week; v. impressed. Also seem pretty good for normal driving, a little bit more road noise especially on c**p Belgian motorways.

Snow Chains - looked at Rudmatic disc system, but very expensive (180 quid + !!); finally found some chains by Pewag called "Sportmatik" which have recently won several awards in german and austrian organisations (ADAC is well-respecetd for anything to do with tyre tests esp. winter tyres). Bought "Pewag Sportmatik SMX73" for about 90 Euros (60 quid). In use they are fantastic, incredibly easy to fit and remove. Used them in anger last week in the french alps and no problems whatsoever with clearance etc etc.
