Here's a video I found of an S4 V8 Avant racing the M3 and Volvo V70R AWD.

Nice Vid.
There is a real improvement to the M3 traction once the tyres are warn, as seen on the vid.
Out of interest (as a non-audi owner), is the saloon quicker/lighter than the avant?

The saloon is about a tenth of a second quicker in tests I've seen, not much big difference.
