Hi - First post - been lurking for a couple of weeks.

Just to tell you guys that the new S4 specs /colours and prices were added to the Audi UK website today.

My Avant should be ordered today (well that's what the salesman said he'd do) for delivery in mid-may

I was going to part/ex my S3 for it, but some FXXker stole it three weeks ago (has since been recovered - now a write off)

Welcome aboard. Sad news though, well, I suppose things can only get better...

Second hand RS4 is much more to my liking for that sort of cash

Agreed, but then that's always the case with buying brand new cars.

Personally, I think Audi have shot themselves in the foot by making it normally aspirated. Tuning options are so much more limited and I personally think that S and RS models should be turbo charged.

Speced one up with all the toys and comes under £44k. Considering a RS4 instead circa £36k.

Expensive car with a few toys - much cheaper options on an import. That's what we get for being in the UK.

The other thing to consider if an RS4 is an alternative is residuals. The RS4 will hold its money well because it's rare and has a niche following, both very positive attributes. The new S4, however good will not be in short supply.

To be fair to the S4, it's difficult to form a view till you have driven one.

On the 5th May 1999, the original purchaser of my ex-S4 Avant paid £39,950. Apart from sunroof, had very few extras.

Hope that puts the £44k for the well specced new one into perspective.

Spot on. The list price on my 2000 S4 was 44k and the new one would be around 40k for the same spec.

So in 2-3 years time you'll be able to pick one up for 18-22K.....Think I might wait and see :0

Yes, my car will be 42k miles, 3 years old and worth 20-22k. Half retained value in 3 years, not too bad for a non-mainstream car.

Makes me want an RS4 now though because the loan interest vs depreciation argument is a strong one in favour.

Fully agree, but you won't get 20-22k for a 3yo with 42k miles on a p/x with a dealer.
Mine is a 2000 model with 42k miles and I was offered 17k recently. So I promptly and said to the dealer.

Obviously a new car is always going to compare badly to a year old machine, but you are buying it new, so you get to spec it and, particually important to my mind when it comes to performance cars, you know how its been driven. Buy an RS4 thats a year old - has it been thrashed on several track days? - or just pottered around the M25?

Also the new S4 is 344hp - 70 odd up on the original version and not that far shy of the RS4.

No turbo, fair enough but then there are downsides to forced induction (flexibility, turbo life etc) also it gives Audi a chance to produce a 450 hp "New" RS4 in about 18months time (if there is enough room in the engine bay)
