Clunking when braking gently

Hi there,
Appreciate this is not a B6 S4 but I have a B6 2004 A4 1.8T as a runaround which has an annoying clunking noise. When pressing brake gently you get a knock coming from left side of vehicle; hard to tell if front or rear.
It doesn't make a noise when pressing brake firmly and there are no noises coming when going over speed bumps or rough road which makes me think it is not suspension related.
Checked over brakes and everything is tight and brakes seem to be fine.
Any suggestions what it may be. Has anyone come across this before and found the issue.
