Should I purchase?

Post by Rishie » Mon Nov 20, 2017 3:21 pm

Looking for some advice please.

I have been offered an '04, low mileage (75K ish) S4 with SH (missed servicing for 4 years between 2008-12 = 20k miles ish) and some choice extras for eg. Milltek exhaust, Audi RNS E, seats upgraded, Carbon cleaned, new wishbones, cv boots, track rod ends, ignition coil packs etc.

The interior and exterior look to be in excellent condition. The current owner has had it for close to two years and looks to be an enthusiast so has taken care of it.

The price is quite toppy given what seems to be out there with the chap looking for £9000 ish for it.

My concern is that the timing chains haven't been done and with the missing service history in the middle this might end up becoming an issue in the future despite its rude health at present. Is there any way to tell if this will be problem in the future apart from looking for 'smoking on start up'? Or am I just being a big girls blouse and should just buy it and enjoy it?

Also what sort of ballpark figure should I be looking at paying for it? Decent ones with FSH seem to be around the 6.5-7K range but I do appreciate condition is king.

In my opinion: The timing chain issue is a matter of “when”, not “if”.

£9k for a B6 S4, which might have a £3k repair bill hovering over it, and part service history...doesn’t sound like a great deal to me.

£9k for a B6 with a four year hole in the service history? Are you having a giraffe?

I sold my Avant with 85k for £7.5k three years ago. That was top dollar at the time because it was a goodun, RNSE Milltek FASH etc. Prices are still going down not up.

Thanks Ian. How about one with FSH and an engine rebuild and all the bits done? Any specific to consider when checking on the engine rebuild?

You guys pay silly money for the B6/7 S4’s. Over here they go for no more than 5k gbp with fash. Same goes for RS4/6 although prices slightly higher.
You can import them from Japan as they have both LHD and RHD cars.

True. But such a pain in the bum to import. And then to insure.

Depends on what you call a PITA. I mean I’m importing my RS4 and gallardo back to the uk and there’s no real issues. Granted it’s not as simple as just finding and buying one in the UK.
Insurance seems to be on par with a RHD(mine are LHD). I’ll probably be using a admiral as they offer multi car policies.
