Hi

Does anyone know the difference in litres between the minimum and maximum marker on the bbk 4.2 v8 engine?

I know these engines take 8.5 litres of oil and i have been told that the difference is 3 litres from min to max but that doesnt sound right to me

Any advice would be very much appreciated

Thanks

That sounds bollocks to me. Putting three litres on would completely <beep> the engine!

I recall reading in the book its one litre between max and min. Personally when I had my B6 with its drinking habit, I just got in the habit of checking the level regularly, and put in half a litre when I topped up. Nice and easy to pour the bottom half of a one litre top of bottle into the oil filler cap too

Well the low level light came on Sunday, I stuck a liter in the light didn't go off.
Got home added another litre still not off, added one more, light off.
So full to min seems to be 3 litres

It's not above maximum now so would have to assume that is correct?

On the dipstick? If you just put three litres in, when was the last time you checked the dipstick?!

After four and a quarter years of running that 4.2, I can definitely say the difference between min to max is most certainly NOT three litres!

Don't trust the oil light to come on - do it the old school way! Much safer!

I checked on Feb 21st, day after I bought it and it was on 2/3's from top of the dipstick.

Some Americans on the S4 owners group said that min was 2 litres?

I have been doing daily checks since the weekend and will move to weekly checks this week.

So what level does the light come on then?

Sounds like you have a leak? Three litres in a month?! Mine was leaking from the rocker cover gaskets when I got it. Thankfully not an expensive job

Once the oil breaks down and becomes contaminated with water/petrol it burns off a lot easier, if you havent serviced the car in a while get it done and re-check your oil usage. if its still high then id be looking into issues with worn piston rings etc, as 3 litres in a month is one serious problem!
My honda when been raped around a track day in day out doesnt even use that much oil!

Like i say I don't think it was full to begin with, so this is part of the problem, also I bought it in Feb, it had been stood since August and only started occasionally up to temp. Last service and oil change was July 1 2015

I'm going to do a full oil change and filter and monitor it.

It's not got an oily smell, it's not leaving any on the drive and the engine is clean, gaskets where done in the service in July along with a terraclean.

had my S4 a few days and covered 500 miles and the level on the dipstick has gone from the top (full) marker to the low marker , but it hasnt been changed for 19,000 miles because its been serviced at Audi dealers on the long service schedule , needless to say this oil is very tired and will be changed for Shell Helix Ultra Pro full synthetic this week with a new PCV valve (due to slight oil smell when pressed hard) and i will monitor the oil usage closely. Checked underneath the car and the engine undertray and there doesnt appear to be any leaks and there is not any timing chain rattle on start up. Looked at a few Audi V8's in A6 and A8 guise and there was rattle on start up on every one of them , this was the quietest and the cleanest car with a full dealer history , so it got the nod. Just clocked 101,000 miles so hardly run-in , the engine isnt as smooth as my previous AMG V8's but the V8 growl on the S4 is addictive.

update on oil usage , have clocked 800 more miles since replacing the PCV valve and oil change , and now no oil usage at all , no oily smells and running very smoothly , no chain rattle on start up (there wasnt previously with the 20k old oil) and amazingly a nice motorway run at slightly over 70mph (honestly officer) and returned 27mpg. The performance is not far behind my old E55k which had a pulley conversion and chip and was running approx 500bhp , the S4 definitely puts the power down better and though slightly nose heavy does handle / corner better than the E55k , the S4 is growing on me to the point i am now considering a deal on a Sprint Blue B7 RS4 with a local trader , is it worth the extra £10k though ?
