Oh god not another which oil is best thread!.........
I have searched and read the opinions people have regarding which oil to use, so, I'd like to state that I do beleive in 'you get what you pay for' and also that I beleive you have to pay more for a better quality oil, I'm not being arrogant but that's were I stand. Also I'm not minted, and the S4 will be a weekend hobby to tinker with and enjoy.
My S4 has the longlife service stamps and is due a service when purchased which I'm looking forward to getting stuck into. I'll probably cover less than 3500 miles in a year, and my car is not warrantied by VAG so I can use any aftermarket products. I will be changing the oil every 5000 miles.
Which oil (and how many litres will I need) would any of you guys recommend please that you have used for years with positive results EG. engine reaching temperature quickly, oil still clear when changed, and of course a nice sweet silent cam chain

The general concencus is either Castrol or Shell. The best way to keep the cam chains quiet is regular changes as opposed to oil quality tbh. I have used Shell Helix Ultra and got 12l for about £35 on ebay.

Awesome ta. Sheel Helix Ultra 5w30?
I see I'm not the only owner with a Black S4 with a full Milltek system, you lucky boy!
Am I correct in thinking that the Milltek HAS to be mapped to the ECU? If this is the case then I should be runnng 361BHP ?

Yes 5w30. No mapping is needed with just a cat back. I will be gutting my precats at some point which doesn't require a map either but may need spacers on the rear o2 sensors. Cheapest and most effective mod for one of these.

Forgot to say you need 8.5 litres for a full oil change.

8.5ltrs cheers.
I'm unsure if I have the cats/and down pipes too as It's too difficult to check for sure until I get it on a ramp at my local. I crawled under and I saw no difference in material/colour of pipe so assumed it was a complete system? It's well ear bashing even at low revs.
Also it is th 5w30 and not 5w40 I want isn't it, the 40 being for the FI cars?
Cheers.

Nope. Stick with 5w30. The main cats are up near the front and look like two small exhaust boxes.

Would 0w30 be suitable, or is this an un-educated question?

I would stick to 5w30 tbh. Do a search on here and you should find some interesting reading on the different oil grades and what it all means.

That's interesting as the RS4 is 9.4 (ish) and as far a I am aware the only difference is the fragile front mounted cooler.
So less than a litre lurking around in there.

It is approx 9.4 litres. I have never had much changed out of 10 litres. Nothing near 1.5 litres.

Mine was definitely 8.5 as did it myself and the new oil went in in 1litre bottles. It went to about 3/4 up the dipstick between the min and max mark. Didn't want to overfill it.

I have changed my oil/filter and used 9.5 litres of Shell Helix Ultra extra Fully Synthetic 5W30 (to the fill line). I have absolutely no start-up rattle from my chain at all since, many thanks Batfinnk for your input
