She's back!

Post by Batfinnk » Sun Jan 26, 2014 4:54 pm

Finally picked up my car last night. Soo good to be back sat behind a snarling V8. Got to pop it back weekend after next to have the l/h rocker cover half moons replaced as they only send him four instead of eight. Sounds so much nicer than before. Little start up rattle from cold and no ticking noise when warmed up. Got all the old bits and may sell on the two cam adjuster units as nothing wrong with them but had them changed as seemed silly not too while the engine was out and in bits anyway. I would say the handling seems better now all the front shocks and arms have been replaced too but been so long since I have driven her it is hard to tell. :biggrin3:

Great stuff batfink, must be very nice to know that all is spot on under the bonnet mate. Have you been brave enough to get the rev needle moving quickly yet?

Pleased for you that all has worked out well and the S4 is driving really great, just got to buy those 19's now

Yes. After we picked her up we had to go over to Essex to see my grandad so it was a trip through the Dartford tunnel. Just gutted that the left tunnel which has better acoustics had a womble going through with a wide load so had to use the other tunnel. I never get past 3rd gear through the tunnel ;)

I have just scnned your stomach churning thread on your engine failure fcuk me that's a huge wad of cash to part with for a repair, at least you have another 100k on the engine with any luck now it's re-built. :s4addict:

It did hurt but got loads for my money so can't grumble :)

Plus how many S4 owners can say they only spent £20 on petrol in two months. :biggrin3:

I've only done about 50 miles since Christmas in mine - haven't been to the pumps for over a month!

Thats some pretty complicated mechanical engineering going on there. Thanks for posting up some pics.
I cant quite figure out where the damage would be if i'm looking at pic 2.

Its such a major job for such a small inexpensive part to fail, there seems to be very little thought for any long term ownership with this design. :audibash:

What is different with the B7 RS4 design, they dont seem to fail.
How has the S4 been after a couple of weeks back with you? :biggrin3:

The RS4 is a different engine and the guides look similar but I believe are made of a different material.

On the second pic there should be a guide running down the left hand side of the middle chain and part of the centre one is missing. The top pic shows the broken bit sitting in the cover. This pic shows where everything should be.

It has been fine since getting it back. Little to no rattle on cold start up. Defo getting my pre cats done soon. :)

Great images. As I said previously man, hard luck, but now enjoy the releif that you won't have the 'cam chain worry' at the back of your mind. I have ordered some fresh shell helix ultra extra on your advice, and thank the jesus for forums like this. I'd be broken if my engine followed your unfortunate path! If I keep on top of oil changes and give her lots of :kissmyrings: then we should have plain sailing.

Well had the half moons done and all good. Just washed her this morning and decided to have a look at the bolts as had a clonking from the o/s front over bumps which has got worse over the last week. Found a couple of loos top mount bolts either side. All tight now and much better. No more annoying clonk :biggrin3:
