Help Wheel problems

Post by s4Thorny » Wed Apr 10, 2013 4:31 pm

I own a 2006 s4 with standard wheels 18" 8j et45 the tyres that are on are 235 x 35 x 18 now the problem is i have been offered an immaculate set of original rotor arm black edition alloys with tyres so we tried 2 on but the front tyre touches the suspension  the rears are perfect and fill the arches nicely the alloys are 19" 8.5j et 45 with 255 x 35 x 19. These are originally from a A6 i believe ! Question is could i buy tyres to fit these and not rub or are the wheels totally useless???

A 6mm spacer would put the wheel / tyre the same distance from the suspension than your current wheels. This will obviously mean that the outside of the wheel / tyre will stick out 12mm more than your current wheels. The trick is to get the balance right i.e how much do you need to move off the suspension and how much clearance do you have at the outside edge by the wheel arch; perhaps a 3mm spacer which means you get 3mm less on the inside than you do now and 9mm on the outside.

Sorry, just realised you have gone from 235/35/18 to 255/35/19. It's no wonder it rubs, you have a higher profile and wider tyre and because the wheel is wider it is closer to the suspension!! I'm sure you can get it to work but would probably mean starting with a 235/30/19 if they make them in this size. 235 should fit ok on an 8.5inch rim and if anything, it'll be stretched giving you more clearance.

Thanks for the quick reply Mikefish i dont want to miss out on these wheels if possible but on the other hand dont want to buy something that no use to me. I'll look into the 235/30/19 route

I'm sure you would be ok with 235/35/19 on the new wheels as the standard 18" should have 235/40/18 on them.
Current car: 2007 BMW 530d touring.
Previous car: 2005 S4 B7.

Well in that case 235/35/19 should be the same width and rolling radious but a bit more strecthed on an 8.5 rim so should be good. The only fierence is the 6mm extra width on both sides which I'd imagine the car should swallow nicely.

ive looked in to this a bit more and it seems people fit the 8.5 wide on the back and a 8 on the front possibly exactly the same rubbing reason i had?? Is there anyone running a 8.5 without any rubbing on the front?????

I had 8.5" fronts when I had the MTM alloys, but I forget what the offset was.

If it's rubbing, fit spacers and longer bolts. It's that simple.

Hi thanks for the reply dan seems like that may be the only real option just not keen on the wheel sticking out past the wing it already looked a bit weird without a spacer never mind with another 6mm or so

I'm running 9x19 ET41. Lowered as well

Wheels sit flush with the arches, no rubbing in the slightest. Not even close
