Variable Power on the B6 S4 Auto / Tiptronic

Post by jonnysideways » Sat Dec 01, 2012 3:39 pm

Hi All

When I bought my new car I was told that the car didnt develop its full BHP when In D (Drive) but only in S (Sport) But all I can see in the manual is that to Achieve the Max speed, the car needs ot be in Sport, as the Gearbox has different Gear Ratio Programs.

Does anyone know if you do get the Full Power in Drive?

cheers

John

my B7 (same BBK engine code) with tiptronic seemed to have all the horses there in Drive, just needed to get the pedal fully down to liberate them. In Sport it seemed to have a crisper response with a "tighter" throttle and as the box was holding the gears longer the power seemed easier to access.

My current B8 S5 with the later FSI engine behaves in a similar split-personality manner and for full on performance and rapid progess I use a combination of Sport and the paddles :thumb:

Thanks

id agree. In D it goes the same if you nail the throttle, but i sport it seems more eager.

Hi Guys,

In sports mode the throttle responce is increased, so that for a smaller press of the pedal the ECU requests more load of the engine. Basically, you press the pedal less for the same responce that you would've got by pressing it further in normal mode.
Also, the gearbox holds on to the gears for longer, so you can reach far higher revs in a gear before the box will shift.

That's it, there's no more engine power. It just means you can play in higher revs ( where there is more power) and it seems with the increased throttle response that you didn't have to do anything to get there :)

Cheers, Chris.
