Oil question

Did an 80 mile round trip today and as I arrived home and was parking the warning light for oil at minimum level came on. Went back out a while later and it has gone out again. Checked the oil and it was at minimum so have topped up. Car has done 98,000. First time I have checked the oil. Is it normal for them to burn a little bit. Have only had the car since the start of september so am new to a lot of it's little quirky bits and pieces. Obviously have had a quick look for leaks and can see no oil patches anywhere.

Ok. Thank you. At least I now know to check regularly. Will have a proper look in daylight at weekend to make sure 100% there isnt a leak but didn't know the oil level before so can monitor from now on.

Does anyone know why they do drink oil? You would think with all this modern tech oil consumption would be a thing of the past. My old diesel A6 avant never used a drop and still hasnt!

All my performance engines have been the same. Don't know why. My fiat coupe drank 1l of oil for every 1k miles. My Alfa is similar. I think the old Cosworths were the same.

And my Nissan Navara 'oil burner' only gets any oil every 2 years at service time.

It does seem like things are going a bit backwards at tmes. My old 54 plate tddi transit connect never used a drop in 6 years. My new 11 plate tdci transit connect drinks it like a fish! So much for progress! Thank god the company pays for the oil! Lol
