After a few weeks with my B7 S4 I have some updates.
Initially I thought the 2000rpm-3000rpm whine would really annoy me but then I came across the rich vein or torque from 1000rpm-2000rpm.
Do they all whine like this?
I now love trying to find the highest gear I can that I can pull from the lowest revs so I can hear that V8 rumble before the whining starts at 2k.
Average MPG is 22.9 which is the same as my B5 RS4 which is OK.
My RS4 was a picture of refinement at 100mph (in Germany) but the S4 is a really raucous and is not a patch on it for high speed refinement oddly, maybe I need to go faster?!
The chassis is definitely way too hard for British roads, I may experiment with slightly lower tyre pressures.
It feels really poised until you hit mid corner bumps and it just skips and jumps, ESP wondering what the f**k is going on.
But throttle response is intoxicating, it's amazing how well it pulls from low revs in high gears.
I just wish the Mk5 GTI engineers had worked on the chassis as the GTI proves it can be both poised and supple.
Is the B6 just as unyielding?

They all whine, B6&B7. Primarily due to the chains being at the rear of the engine.

I haven't noticed the whine and I'm quite picky about these things. The ESP is a PITA and seems overly sensitive and could do with the 2 stages the B7 RS4 has to make it more friendly.

Mines just passed it's MOT and the VED renewal came thought at £215 for the year... result!
