tweek - if the stealer can't fix the noise from the window over rough surfaces then perhaps I can help. I had a similar problem on my S4 and my Audi Centre tried twice to fix it - stripping the door down on one occasion - without success. I researched the issue quite a bit and it would appear it's to do largely with the doors and window frame. Apparently the door and the black part of the window frame are separate. These are secured to each another but if they're not perfectly aligned the window will push the frame slightly out of shape. It would appear this annoying rattle/squeak comes from the upper seal which runs only at the top of the window. There's the spongy seal that runs all the way around, then there's the troublesome one and finally the outer. If you drop the window a little, does the rattle go away? The rattle is actually the strip of rubber catching on the upper part of the door frame on the car.

The solution is to fully open the window and then apply pressure with a knee as near as possible to the top of the door near the alarm indicator (to be safe, place a folded up towel between your knee and the door panel). Hold the black window frame on the vertical piece and midway on the upper piece. From outside the car pull back firmly but carefully on the frame - a firm but careful two or three times should do it, basically pulling the frame away from the car. As already mentioned, follow this up by applying a moderate amount of vinyl protection to all of the rubber. Mine's been perfect since performing the above operation back in January.

Hi John,

The rattle does go away if the window is lowered slightly, the dealer re-aligned the window carrier and this has improved the situation but not resolved it. My previous A4 had the same fault but this started at approx 50k miles and never did get fixed (sold it with 130k on the clock), the S4 has this at 30k miles and is really not on.

Your solution of pulling the frame out slightly, did this create any wind noise?

Thanks

Pete

No, there has been no wind noise - I don't think you're going to exert anywhere near enough force to cause any. It really is a win-win solution. :D

This is clearly a design fault with the B6 and I agree that it isn't on. I also have a 1998 B5 A4 with 148k on the clock and that car has no rattles or squeaks whatsoever - just the occasional 'clunk' from the driver's seat when I pull away (the cause of which I can't track down :x )

That said, this is the only real gripe I have had with my S4 build quality wise. Overall, I'd say it's the best screwed together car I've ever owned.
