Autocar still gave it the woolly steering feel rent a quote.

It was an interesting show. Whilst it's great to have the S4 driven against the M3 on the track, since it was done by the stig, it loses some reality doesn't it? I would prefer to have a more 'average' driver compare the cars, especially in the wet.

I was actually expecting the M3 to win, since I'd expect it to do better driven by the stig. However I'm now thinking that my car must outdo the M3 too, as I'm sure that my handling must be as good as the new S4, it has almost as much top end power, but has 40% more torque.

I know that my car's good, but I just assumed that the M3 is still better.

I might have to get around to test driving the new S4 just to be sure...

Dippy,

Or you could find a M3 to race. Then you will really know!!!

I've tried - but the only ones I come across are driven by old gits who have more money than driving ability/enthusiasm.

Oh - and I'm slightly reluctant to test drive the new S4 in case I like it too much (which is why I've never test driven an RS4).

You need a trackday.

I've been in an M3 round Oulton Park and they are excellent on the track. Much much faster in every way than a standard S4.

But from what I hear, Dippy's S4 has been modded a tad and therefore could represent a test for a M3 on track or off

Exactly mate.

I am going down roughly the same mods route as Dippy.

It will be interesting to see how the handling improves over the standard car.

Even though the M3 has an amazing engine, I prefer the turbo's

You modded S4's would seriously be equal to or faster than a std M3 on say Donington....... but their reply is that their car is more enjoyable driven fast....... but Derek Bell says the S4 driven right, is the most enjoyable road car (pre RS4 coz I ain't sure he's reported on one) he's ever taken on a track (that was to my scared rabbit face)- and believe me I <beep> myself twice over at Croft, a relatively slow circuit, in a std S4..... nuff said really the new S4 (not driven by Stig O' the Dump but someone like Bell, like for like) would p*ss all over the M3

I think (hope) you are right Andy.

The thing I do not like about the standard S4 is the understeer. I'm hoping the stiffer, lower H&R coilovers will fix that, AmD assure me they will.

The new S4 seems to be lower and stiffer than the old one from what I have seen and read, so will suffer less from understeer which is a good thing

Well guys, on the strength of that Top Gear report on sunday night, I got my arse over to my local dealer yesterday to arrange a test drive of the new S4 V8.

There was an Imola one in the showroom. To my eyes it stood fairly tall! When I popped the bonnet open, I was struck by the amazing compactness of the V8 engine.

It was also mounted well forward of the front axle- not a good sign, I would have thought!

The test drive planned for this weekend will reveal more. Really cant see myself in this car, but stranger things have happened
