Hi all.

The car has a full service history and I have owned it for two years and have had no issues upto press. The £5200 is all in including all parts, labour for the chain and tensioner replacement and a further £100o for a new clutch and flywheel and includes the VAT. When you consider that Vat accounts for £1000 then it is not so bad.

As I have said before, I love my S4 and don't mind spending the money. I was planning to chop it in for an RS4 next year but to be honest this experience has out me off.

Got some new MTMS sitting in the garage and going to get the car wrapped in the new year.

Going to Audi tomorrow to inspect so will take pics and post them on here.

Cheers all.

The fact is this is only the second "chain" problem that I have every heard about.
Many of the Audi engines share exactly the same chain layout, including the RS4 FSI.
It's not a problem.
That's why I'm sceptical as to the cause.

Either it's component failure or non LONG-LIFE oil has been put in on long life service schedule.
OR, cooking oil has been put in :)

Cheers ms dears.

TBH i personally believe that these engines are not suitable to a long life service interval and this is a contributing factor behind engine failures

When I was faced with a similar bill for a similar issue I decided not to repair a 90,000 mile engine. Instead I went for the replacement engine route, which was pretty much the same price.

This meant I had a very low mileage engine (From Germany but that's another story) and the satisfaction that I could start again on a proper service plan.

Hi all.

The beast is back and purring like a kitten with no startup rattle either.

Total costs was a tadge under over £5.5K with £1500 of that labour charges. In all honestly I thought that a main audi dealer would rip me a new one but to be honest Audi Teeside have been exemplary. They have kept me updated at all times, provided a full list of parts and costs (£3k) with the most expensive option being the flywheel at £617.50. Brand new A6 courteosy car for over 2 weeks, full valet and to top it all off, a free tin of sweets when I collected the car!!!!!

All in all, expensive but I think worth doing. I love my S4 :kissmyrings: and it was worth to give it a new lease of life.

Cheers for the the advice.

Getting it wrapped in the New Year with new custom painted MTMS fitted so will post some pics when down.

Viva la V8.

Scary, my b7 s4 is on 147500 miles and no engine issues yet. No way could I afford £5k of repairs...

Bl**dy H*ll, £5500 is damn near the value of the car. When I read this thread first I'd have thought seriously about "breaking" it and starting again with a new vehicle. Perhaps it is better the devil you know, but it's still a serious amount of coin...

I'm getting wheel bearings, discs, pads and brake lines replaced all round this weekend, and the parts are getting close to £1k. However, the guy who does my mechanicing is a damn sight easier to pay than a dealership...
